Two Polytechnic students complete their Erasmus+ studies at Vienna University of Applied Sciences

Students of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Oleksandra Kurylo and Veronika Melnyk have successfully completed their studies under the Erasmus+ Credit Academic Mobility Programme at the leading university of Vienna, University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna.

Future professionals shared their impressions of studying at the University of Austria.

Veronika Melnyk, student of group 201-FM, speciality 292 International Economic Relations:

“I have been studying at the FH des BFI Vienna for the second semester in a row and I can say that Erasmus+ is a very valuable experience and a great opportunity to test my strengths and knowledge in the European education system. Studying in Austria is significantly different from what we are used to in Ukraine – 70% of all assignments are team projects or just group work, and this type of work is the most valued here.

The classes are taught in English, which is a huge plus, because improving your foreign language skills is very important, especially for us, students of the speciality 292 International Relations. The teachers and all university staff are very friendly and always ready to help. I would also like to add that this semester was filled with many exciting events, excursions and new acquaintances. ESN representatives did everything to make this semester unforgettable, and I can say that they succeeded, for which I am sincerely grateful to them. Also during this time, I had a chance to visit one of the most beautiful cities in Austria – Hallstatt, as well as to visit Hungary, Italy, France and Monaco. I am very grateful for the opportunity to stay for another semester in Vienna, because I just fell in love with this city. It is a pleasure to study here. So, if you want to travel and make friends from all over the world, the Erasmus+ programme is definitely for you, you won’t regret it!”

Oleksandra Kurylo, student of group 201-FM, speciality 292 International Economic Relations:

“I am currently studying on an academic mobility programme at the Vienna University of Applied Sciences, and I can already say that this is the best experience of my life. Since the first days I arrived in Vienna, my life has been filled with various events, excursions and games organised by the university for us to get to know other exchange students. My host university and its team always offer interesting activities, such as picnics, trips to vintage shops, excursions, movie nights and of course trips to different cities in Austria or countries for a few days to have fun with other students. It was very interesting to learn about the culture of other people, and now I have friends from all over the world. Before that, I was worried that it would be difficult to integrate into society, but everyone was very nice and friendly. The most important thing is not to be afraid to take the initiative in communication!

The education is somewhat different from the system we are used to in Ukraine. The focus is on group work, which requires responsibility from everyone, as the task is assessed comprehensively. Most often, it is the teacher who assigns you to groups so that in the future, for example, at work, you will be adaptable to any situation and know how to behave and find an approach to different people. The schedule is quite free, so you will have enough time not only to study, but also to spend time with friends and travel. During this semester, I visited Hungary, Poland and a very picturesque place in Austria – Hallstatt, I highly recommend visiting there! But I spent most of my time in Vienna with my friends, it’s a very beautiful city and you will definitely find something interesting every day.

This experience has left me with an unforgettable impression, I even believe that this is the best period of my life and I am sure that this is not my last exchange. If you have doubts about applying for an academic mobility programme, you should know that you will definitely not regret your choice in the future. You will have an incredible opportunity to gain experience of living abroad, studying according to the European model, making many international friends and learning more about international culture. You won’t regret going to Vienna because it’s impossible not to fall in love with this city!”
