History of the Department of Higher and Applied Mathematics

The year of the birth of the Department of Higher Mathematics of Poltava Polytechnic Yuri Kondratyuk is 1952, when the Department of Higher Mathematics of Poltava Civil Engineering Institute was created on the basis of the disciplines "Higher Mathematics" and "Theoretical Mechanics". The staff of the department consisted of 5 people. Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Oleksandr Kurenkov was appointed the first Head of the Department. He was in charge of the department until 1957. During this time, the organisational formation of the department took place.

From 1957 to 1961, the department was headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Mykola Mykolaiovych Suprun. During this period, the number of hours allocated to the study of mathematics in the curriculum increased, and the number of students admitted to the institute increased. Therefore, the Department of Mathematics grew in numbers and was strengthened organisationally. A mathematical workshop was introduced, based on logarithmic rulers and Felix arithmetic machines. A seminar on philosophical problems of mathematics was launched, and scientific work became more active.

From 1961 to 1972, the department was headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Klara S. Deineko. The number of members of the department reaches 17. A methodological seminar begins to work regularly at the department. The volume of the course in higher mathematics increases to 520 hours. The material base is strengthened, and desktop electric computers appear. The methodology of the mathematical workshop is improved.

In 1972, the Department of Higher Mathematics was divided into two departments: Higher Mathematics and Theoretical Mechanics. The Department of Higher Mathematics is headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Yurii Zasko. The number of lecturers with academic degrees and titles began to grow gradually. The department began to cooperate with the Institute of Hydromechanics of the USSR Academy of Sciences and Kyiv State University.

From 1985 to 1988, the department was headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Anatolii Horban. At that time, the department already employed 9 PhDs.

In 1989, Oleg Yemets, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor, was appointed Head of the Department. Personal computers appeared at the department, M. I. Serov and O. O. Yemets defended their doctoral theses, the postgraduate school was opened, scientific seminars began to work regularly, and 4 PhD theses were defended.

In 1998, the Department of Higher Mathematics was again divided into two departments. The Department of Higher Mathematics is headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Serov M.I., and the department continues to develop.

In January 2018, the Department of Higher Mathematics merged with the Department of Applied Mathematics, Informatics and Mathematical Modelling and received a new name: the Department of Higher and Applied Mathematics, with Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Mykola Serov as its head.

Since October 2019, the department has been headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Nataliia Ichanska.

The department regularly holds relevant methodological seminars, round tables and scientific research. The department's research staff are active participants in national and international conferences, scientific seminars of the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the National Aviation University, etc. The department's research staff actively cooperate with the Poltava Scientific Research Forensic Centre, which results in joint scientific roundtables, educational and methodological webinars, master classes and workshops.
