"Being around": a new educational series about mental health support is launched

The Ministry of Education and Science together with UNICEF, the portal "Diia. Digital Education" created a series for teachers, educators, volunteers and everyone who works with children to better understand feelings and emotional reactions.

"During air alerts, when there is a possibility of air threats from the russian federation, children and adults feel tension, anxiety and fear. And this is normal in extreme situations, but often such situations do not pass without a trace. I am grateful to the partners for their initiative and steps in creating modern and convenient tools to support educators and students during their studies. By creating new tools for the support and development of the individual during difficult life conditions, we are forming an important foundation for rebuilding the future," – said Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Serhii Shkarlet.

Why do Ukrainians need this series?

  • To understand how war affects children and how a specialist can help;
  • To get recommendations on how to avoid re-traumatizing the child, how to build communication with him/her, how to start a conversation about a difficult experience;
  • To learn to recognize post-traumatic stress disorder by its symptoms;
  • To acquire skills to support children's mental health during education;
  • To learn how proper nutrition and physical activity can help improve mental health;
  • To learn how to apply simple practices to restore one's own peace and stabilize the condition of children, build psychological resilience.

"Children in Ukraine have been through almost 11 months of war with rocket attacks and the loud howling of air raid sirens. They are particularly vulnerable. They often have no choice but to study, play and sleep in shelters. Moreover, without electricity, millions of boys and girls live in the cold and without access to online classes. UNICEF has developed this series to ensure that caregivers, teachers and social workers can cope with the trauma that children in Ukraine have suffered and help them adjust to these conditions," – said the head of the UNICEF Office in Ukraine, Murat Shahin.

The series contains three modules:

  • Module 1 "How war affects children";
