The M-596 Project was created by the team of Steel Freedom 2019 winners - students of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Stanislav Zosim (team leader, the basic concept developer), Anna Bondar (the general layout, planning and drawing organizer), Oleksandr Slobodniak (the interior developer and visualizer), Anzhelika Tryhub (the developer of technical drawings, illustrations, description and video presentation), Taiisiia Chesnokova (the interior visualizer, creator of the presentation video). The team coordinator was PhD in architecture, Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture and Town Planning of ERI of Architecture and Construction Taras Rudenko.
The social office will be located in the central part of Mariupol (Nakhimov Street). The construction area is 3600 square meters. The funds for the project are already included in the city budget for 2021, as the city council announced.
“The participation in the National Architectural Student Competition ‘Steel Freedom 2019’ became really symbolic. The team’s project, which was ranked third at the competition, is actually the winner. So, the autograph of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” will now be in the center of Mariupol as yet another example of our achievements emphasizing the authority of our university and our schools of thought!” Oleksandr Zyma, PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor, Director of Education and Research Institute of Architecture and Construction said.
The project has the feel of the port city and of the first center of steel industry. The steel elements in the building decoration create the effect of the waves of the Azov sea when you pass by in a car or by foot along the street. Besides, the stripes are meant to protect the building from sun rays at noon, as well as to be the acoustic barrier from the street noise.
“The work was quite interesting, decently performed. We analyzed the town planning structure, the peculiarities of the city, what people in Mariupol are engaged in, what characteristics we could use. It is a great success, because there were a lot of participants. If we think of it as the architects’ fulfillment of requirements set by the customer, then I believe it’s the community’s acknowledgement that should have been achieved. It was of great pleasure to work with such students and help others. Creative people with unique mindset have many opportunities at the job market,” Taras Rudenko commented.
The main idea for creating this facility was to project a social office which would allow Mariupol citizens to go to a new level of service in the social protection field and considerably improve the quality of services provided to citizens.
“We see it as a three-floor building with unique architecture which will be associated with the city of Mariupol, including all the requirements of energy efficiency, accessibility and state construction regulations,” Serhii Zakharov, the Deputy Mayor, said.
The project of polytechnic students is an open and accessible building with strict exterior providing place for meeting, public services and city community.
The projects had to meet such requirements as the application of modern architectural solutions, which had to be first of all made in steel constructions, and that the constructive form should be connected directly with the image and the planning of the building.
The construction was planned with an accent on different architectural features such as representativeness, spacial features, functionality, flexibility, comfort and stability. The first floor was to include the front office with light and warn interior and glass walls which make for great level of insight and transparency; a self-service zone, a cafe and an information zone. The second floor would consist of a back office providing a comfortable work space, meeting space, the director’s office, personal meeting hall for the mayor with the waiting room and room for the employees. The third floor would have a conference hall with the access to a terrace, a cafeteria and rest place for the visitors. Another peculiarity is the application of flotation safety devices for the evacuation of handicapped people, located at the terrace on the square side.
The team leader, the main concept developer, student Stanislav Zosim said, “I was really happy to hear from our coordinator that the project won in the polling. When I gathered the team to participate there, I could not even imagine that we will do it so well. For the future architects, I would like to say that our university is a great place to study. Many international events take place here, and all the conditions for development are ensured. I took part at various workshops, events in Belgium, China and other countries, and these opportunities were provided by the university. This academic atmosphere of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” contributes a lot to our achievements. The win at Steel Freedom gave me more self-confidence and the faith that everything is possible.”
Let us remind you, that the students’ team of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” won two prize places in both categories at the prestigious National Architectural Student Competition “Steel Freedom 2019” having successfully presented their project.
