Ecology: the Winners of the Second Round of the All-Ukrainian Student Research Competition are Announced

On March 18-20, 2020, the second round of the All-Ukrainian Student Research Competition on Ecology took place. Due to the nationwide quarantine introduction, it was held online.

Since 2014, National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” became the higher education institution to host the second round of the All-Ukrainian Student Research Competition on Ecology for the sixth time in a row. Despite the emergency situation, the competition took place. This year 107 research articles from 61 higher educational institutions of Ukraine were submitted for the competition.

The Ministry of Education of Ukraine and the National Scientific Organization “Institute of Education Content Modernization” in the letter of 12.03.2020 recommended to cancel the second round of the Competition, the closing sessions of the scientific and practical conferences, or to hold them by video-conference. The conclusions of the All-Ukrainian Student Research Competition in 2019/2020 should be drawn according to the first round results or to the online conferences.

“The second round of the Competitions was held in distance (online) form in accordance with the letter of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine of 12.02.2020 No. 22.1/10-713. The competition commission members studied the articles thoroughly, considering the results of the second round first stage,” commented Oksana Illiash, a member of the Competition commission, candidate of technical sciences, associate professor, the head of the Department of Practical Ecology and the Nature Management of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”. She added: “On the ground of the research articles reviews and open discussions, according to the parts 4.7, 4.8 of the Organization Regulations of the All-Ukrainian Student Research Competition on Natural, Technical and Humanitarian Sciences, the competition commission determined 72 best research articles, the authors of which were invited to participate in the second stage of the second round.”

To organize and hold the second round of the Competition a specialized Competition Commission on Ecology was created, and the students submitted their research papers for their consideration. The commission consisted of scientists, academic staff of the base institution, that is National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, and of other higher education establishments (Zaporizhzhia National University, the National Aviation University, Sumy State University, Kharkiv National Highway University, Bohdan Khmelnitskyi Cherkasy National University, National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorskyi Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, V. Lazarian Dnipro National Railway Transport University, O.M. Beketov National University of Urban Economy in Kharkiv, Donetsk National Technical University, National University “Zhytomyr Polytechnic”, the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering, Mykolaiiv National Agricultural University, Odesa National Academy of Food Technologies, Rivne State University of Humanities, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, National University “Lviv Polytechnic”, Bukovynian State Medical University, the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine, Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding, Vinnytsia Academy of Continuous Education, Vinnytsia National Agricultural University, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Poltava V. G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University, Vasyl’ Stus Donetsk National University, Vinnytsia National Technical University, Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University, Odesa State Ecological University, Sumy National Agricultural University, Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, Cherkasy State Technical University, Kremenchuk Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi National University).

“Ecological problems now concern every person, from everyday life to the industrial level. It is great that students from different corners of Ukraine are interested in them and suggest their ideas to solve them. Such competitions are of great support for young scientists and an opportunity to realize their potential,” said the head of the specialized Competition commission, Rector of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko. “Articles submitted for the competition excel by the variety of the concerned ecological problems of Ukrainian regions and by high level of the studied questions relevancy.”

The articles cover such topics as:

  • evaluation of biological resources and biotesting system development;
  • soil phytotoxicity and productivity evaluation;
  • modelling the natural and industrial factor influence on the ecological safety of facilities and territories;
  • sewage and air discharges cleaning;
  • industry waste recycling with useful material production;
  • water quality evaluation;
  • ecological safety of food sources;
  • anthropogenic source influence on the condition of biological environment;
  • landscape and ecological structure of Ukraine study;
  • energy saving problems.

The Competition winners were determined in accordance with the Regulations of the All-Ukrainian Student Research Competition in knowledge fields and specializations No. 605 of 18.04.2017 in the amount of 25% from the research authors’ number. In total, 133 research articles participated in the competition. 33 students became winners, who were given first grade diplomas (to 7 people), second grade diplomas (to 10 people), third grade diplomas (to 16 people).
