Research work of students is the main priority of the students’ scientific club "Philology", which has been operating for 3 years at the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation of Poltava Polytechnic. During this time, the head of the group – Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation Anna Pavelieva conducted 48 meetings of the club on topical issues of translation and literary studies.

At the meeting of the students’ scientific club "Philology", dedicated to the use of new computer and mobile technologies in education, students focused on three main areas –  video conferencing apps (Zoom, Google Meet, Viber, Facebook), educational websites, programs and platforms (Trello, Jamboard, Padlet, Google Classroom, WizLQ, EdApp, Kahoot), popular online courses (Coursera, FutureLearn, Udemy, Udacity, as well as MOOCs (massive open online courses)).

"This club meeting was extremely productive and aroused special interest among our students, as today, we all use many programs and apps for studying, including electronic dictionaries and books, translators, podcasts, online platforms with courses, tasks, tests, etc. There are many communities on social networks for learning foreign languages and for live communication with native speakers. Bachelor's students shared their experience of using various apps for learning English and German, which they use in their studies, and master’s students told about the use of machine translation systems and CAT-tools, so each member of the club brought something new for themselves," – says the head of the club, Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation Anna Pavelieva.

The club partakers paid a lot of attention to artificial intelligence in education – machine learning, told about Learndash – one of the most famous learning management systems, Duolingo – a popular free app for learning English, German, French and Spanish, used by more than 300 million users, Thinkster – artificial intelligence for individualized mathematics education, Querium – a STEM skills improvement program, Alta by Knewton – a program that uses adaptive learning to detect gaps in students' knowledge and fill these gaps with high-quality educational material from their own databases.

Anna Diachenko, a master's student of the specialty "Philology", spoke about using the Learning Language With Netflix tool, which can not only improve your English, but also boost soft skills such as critical and strategic thinking, pitching, networking, small talks, personal and professional values.

"The Netflix catalog is filled with movies in many languages, and the platform uses a wide range of foreign language offerings to help us get to know them better while enjoying original movies. In this way, you can watch, for example, the series "Narcos" to better understand Spanish and its various flexions, such as Mexican and Colombian versions of the Spanish language. Or to understand the difference between English in Broadchurch and English spoken in New York. Thanks to this platform, you can watch TV series and movies in uncommon languages such as Scandinavian, Hindi, Swahili and Oriental," – said Anna Diachenko.

The permanent students’ scientific club "Philology" has been operating since May 2018. Meetings of the students’ scientific club are held in English and Ukrainian at least once a month with a discussion of the results of scientific work, publishing activities, abstracts, etc. During the scheduled meetings of the club, topical issues of literary studies, linguistics, applied linguistics, translation studies are considered; round tables on acute socio-political and cultural topics are held master classes are conducted.
