The International Fuel Congress is a scientific event aimed at exchanging knowledge, experience and generating new ideas along with creating alternative solutions to certain technical problems among students, industry professionals and scientists through public presentations, discussions, debates and quizzes. Students present the results of scientific activities in the form of reports and stands – the best are awarded by the jury.

This year, PJSC “Naftogaz of Ukraine” supported the student congress, which is traditionally organized by the Ivano-Frankivsk Student Branch of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and presented a new online educational project for young professionals.

“Students of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” and the separate structural subdivision Poltava College of Oil and Gas had the opportunity together with the rector – Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Onyshchenko to attend the Eastern Europe Subsurface Conference and the 5th International Conference on Geology and Development. Polytechnic students also volunteered and assisted the event organizers.

At the opening of the conference it was interesting to hear the vision of the oil and gas industry development in Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region from the heads of government agencies and leading companies. During the break, the conversation with the Head of Ukrainian Geological Survey (UGS) Roman Opimakh revealed to us some features of the accounting of oil and gas fields.

A panel discussion was held at the International Fuel Congress on new challenges in Ukraine's energy sector – it was extremely interesting to observe the comparison of hydrogen and synthetic gases with traditional methods of energy production.

Later, SPE officers met with Laura Precupanu, SPE Regional Director for Europe. We discussed ways to solve communication problems with each other. We are preparing to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the SPE section at Poltava Polytechnic; and Ms. Laura, as well as representatives of other student chapters will be invited to this event.

This is an extremely large-scale and prestigious event with unique opportunities for industry connections, quality networking and communication with professionals,” – told Master’s student of the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas, President of SPE Poltava Polytechnic Student Chapter UA, Oleksii Lytviak.

Deliberations and discussions took place on three main topics: “The new face of the young specialist, seen by employers and whether students are ready for change”, “Decarbonization, hydrogen and synthetic gas are future challenges for the industry”, “Ukraine as a center of European energy security: storage, reliable GTS and hydrogen transportation”.

PJSC “Naftogaz of Ukraine” presented a new online educational platform – Mykhailo Bratakh and Oksana Rediuk announced the reorganization of the “IPL” training platform into “DEEP”. Representatives of SPE at Poltava Polytechnic discussed the possibility of partnership with this platform.

The round table “HR management vision of leading oil and gas companies regarding university graduates and young specialists in general” included intensive communication between students and their potential employers, discussion of requirements for future professionals, and deliberation on licensing programs at universities. Among Ukrainian higher education institutions, Poltava Polytechnic has the largest portfolio of software products donated for business purposes by the university’s business partners. For example, Schlumberger opened access to some of its resources; state-of-the-art laboratories for 3D visualization as well as 3D modeling and design in the oil and gas industry, and the most modern in Ukraine training center with drilling simulators were opened in the university campus; Siemens has opened Ukraine’s first leading-edge oil and gas training and research center; and a well-known British company donated an innovative laboratory to the Polytechnic.

“Activity at such conferences and the topic of the thesis are one of the main criteria that recruiters of leading companies will pay attention to. Resumes should be written for a specific vacancy,” – Mykhailo Bratakh advised students for successful employment.

The congress program also included competitions of posters and scientific reports, as well as a professional quiz for students. The jury evaluated the scientific novelty, quality of posters, and performances of the contestants.

Yuliia Diachenko, a postgraduate student of the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas, spoke at the competition of scientific reports.

Master’s student of the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas Andrii Buchynskyi took third place in the poster competition. Last year, he won a competition for student scientific and technical research papers using Siemens automation tools and received an award from Siemens Ukraine CEO Maciej Zielinski. The winner noted that the conference and congress were extremely interesting and provided an opportunity to communicate with representatives of many companies, as well as get acquainted with the industry in more detail.

“I hope that you, students, enjoyed a three-day stay at the conference and congress, as well as understood the main message of the event – to communicate and collaborate with each other, establish contact with professionals, learn, read, study English, do not miss all new technological opportunities and strive to be a better version of yourself, as the best ones get the best job,” – wished the participants of the student congress the regional director of SPE in Europe, Laura Precupanu.

Winners as well as prize-winners received official diplomas, and congress participants were given certificates.

Earlier, the polytechnic lecturer won the competition of innovative ideas from Schlumberger and UkrGasVydobuvannya.
