The meeting of the working party on the development of bicycle infrastructure in Poltava chose the winners of the competition in the bicycle parking design.
The project of the graduate student of Education and Research Institute of Architecture and Construction of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Rostyslav Fedotov won in the open voting. Twelve original projects participated in the competition, three best were chosen out of them. The winner will receive a prize from GIZ, an action camera, the others will be awarded diplomas and promotional gifts.
According to the working party members, the winner’s design solution meets the criteria of functionality and is anti-vandal, economically viable, appropriate in the unique city design and aesthetic.
“Poltava Ride bicycle parking is not only a comfortable and functional addition to the city space, but also a way to encourage the young generation to use bicycles daily, make cycling a new trend in the social media. The projected parking is intended for four places, but it is easily adapted to any number of places, which makes it versatile for placing it at different houses and buildings of our city,” the author commented.
Rostyslav Fedotov’s work will become a part of the pilot project of Poltava City Council on organizing the cycling infrastructure on Poltava streets. Now the authorities are working on a separate specialized program for this problem.
“According to the competition results, the design of the parking for bicycles which was given the first place has to be the standard one for all the organizations, both public and private. So we will further include this decision in the meeting of the committee of Poltava City Council to determine a common design of bicycle parking for everyone who wishes to construct one near their building. This way we can prevent chaotic design and keep a unified style, which will make our city more attractive and tidy,” Olekdandr Shamota, the Secretary of Poltava City Council, commented.
The pilot project of cycling infrastructure will be started from the streets Yakivchanska, Heroiv ATO, Heroiv Stalinhrada, and 23 Veresnia.
The cycling lanes organization implicates changing the traffic scheme, so now the suggested project is being considered by the National Police of Ukraine. After approval by all the appropriate bodies, new road lanes for drivers and bicycle riders will be painted. This will give the possibility to give a start to the process of connecting the residential areas to Poltava city center with a system of cycling lanes, cycling paths and other possibilities to travel by bicycle.
Congratulations to the winner! We wish him new unique projects and wins!
