Philologists Discuss the Influence of Romanticism on the World Culture at the Scientific Club Meeting

The participants of the scientific club “Philology” led by PhD in Philology, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Anna Pavelieva discussed the main aesthetic principles and key peculiarities of romanticism as one of the most important movements in music, art and poetry. All the speakers agreed that this movement of the 18th - 19th centuries had a great influence on the creative works of later periods turning into neo-romanticism and still being present in modern art movements.

According to Head of the scientific club Anna Pavelieva, the discussion about the aesthetics of romanticism was inspired by the 200th anniversary of Walter Scott’s novel Ivanhoe: “At this round table we covered the questions for which we simply do not have enough time in class, including Thomas Chatterton’s cult of a romantic writer, symbol of a sensible, ill-faited writer, who is not understood by the cruel world. The long list of romantic characters includes different authors from George Byron, John Keats and Vincent Van Gogh to Jim Morrison and Amy Winehouse.”

“The Romanticism replaced the Renaissance and coincided with the Industrial Revolution, strengthening the cult of nature, feelings and humans. The period of romanticism formed the ideas of tourism, hiking and picnics meant to bring back the unity of human and nature. It was also fascinating to learn about the literature movement of pre-romanticism, including the works of J. W. Goethe and F. Schiller,” Anna Boiko, a forth-year student of the Faculty of Humanities of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, winner of the annual M. V. Hohol Award in Literature, commented.

Students prepared informative presentations and exchanged their thoughts on the famous romanticist writers’ works and the art of that period.

“I have learned a lot of new things about the folklore, Byronist and utopian movements of romanticism in literature, the artists of this style, such as Francisco Goya, William Turner, Ivan Aivazovkyi,” third-year student of Faculty of Humanities of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, winner of this year’s annual city literature award named after V. H. Korolenko Sofiia Dmytriuk said. “Every painting has its own story, some peculiarities of this period, symbols, shows the author’s mindset and ideas. Romanticists were the first ones to notice the human’s inner conflicts, the two worlds of existence; they came to conclusion that the reason of evil is the lack of skill or will to balance the emotional and the rational, the personal and the social, the altruism and the egoism.”

The students of Poltava schools often join the scientific club, and the Faculty of Humanities of our university closely cooperates with Poltava Scientific Lyceum No. 3, holding excursions at the linguistic centers, scientific round tables and workshops on translation.
