Poltava Polytechnic scientist and postgraduate student successfully present their research findings at the European conference AAPG 2024

On 28-29 May, 2024, Olena Martus, postgraduate student of the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering and Technology of the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, and her supervisor, Head of the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering and Technology, Professor Branimir Cvetkovic, took part in the European Conference AAPG 2024, which was held at the Holiday Inn Krakow Hotel in Poland.

The educational visit to Poland was made possible due to the fact that the research papers of the postgraduate student and the professor were selected by the AAPG committee of specialists for presentation and poster section.

Within the framework of the section, postgraduate student Olena Martus presented a report on “Innovative strategies for Accurate oil recovery in Ukrainian reservoirs”. The co-author and supervisor of the thorough scientific research and presentation was Branimir Cvetkovic, a scientist and specialist with extensive practical experience in leading foreign companies.

In her research, Olena Martus explores innovative strategies for precise oil recovery from Ukrainian fields. Using a comprehensive approach combining laboratory research, hydrodynamic modelling and data analysis, postgraduate student of Poltava Polytechnic proves the critical importance of taking into account the facies distribution when calculating the oil recovery factor. According to the young scientist, the presented work became an important milestone in her scientific activity, as it is a test of her future dissertation research.

Poltava Polytechnic Professor Branimir Cvetkovic presented the poster “Screening out Recovery by Injection of Water and Gas in the North Sea Naturally Fractured Chalk Reservoir”. The co-authors of his paper were Olena Martus, Taras Petrenko, Oleksandr Bibliv and Liubov Shumska.

It should be noted that the participation in this powerful international conference, which was held to establish fruitful cooperation, exchange of experience and attract investments, allowed representatives of the scientific community of Poltava Polytechnic to present the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering and Technology of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” as a high-tech and leading one with a high level of scientific research and training of qualified personnel.

Ukraine was also represented at the large-scale scientific and educational event by students of the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”:

  • Alina Mykhailenko, who presented a report during the student section on “Preliminary estimation of energy recovery of transferred oil and gas wells to the geothermal fund in the conditions of nanotechnology: Dnipro-Donets basin, Eastern Ukraine”. Serhii Levoniuk and Mykhailo Fyk were the supervisors of the work.
  • Nataliia Leontieva, who participated in all the events of the conference and supported the students who spoke.

It is important to note that the tickets and accommodation were free of charge for Ukrainian students thanks to the sponsorship of PGNiG Orlen Group and Equinor, as well as the Polish organisers, in particular Piotr Krzywiec.

Overall, the large-scale international conference was an excellent platform for new acquaintances and experience exchange with representatives of leading oil and gas companies, educational and research institutions. The event was extremely successful due to the active participation of experts, scientists and representatives of leading companies, who had a unique opportunity to establish new contacts and find inspiration for the further development of their projects.

In addition to fruitful scientific communication, the participants of the AAPG 2024 conference also explored the picturesque city of Krakow.

Krakow is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, a treasure trove of history and culture, home to Europe’s largest central square, the Market Square, surrounded by old houses and majestic churches.

The Old Town of Krakow, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, impresses with its mediaeval streets, cosy cafes and unique atmosphere.

The Royal Wawel Castle, which has been the residence of Polish kings for centuries, is particularly noteworthy. Its towers offer breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Wawel Hill, where the castle is located, is not only a historical site, but also a picturesque park where you can take a walk, admire nature and feel the grandeur of the past.

The stay in Krakow was a great addition to the scientific programme of the AAPG 2024 conference, where participants gained relevant knowledge and skills as well as unforgettable impressions of this amazing city.

After fruitful work at the AAPG 2024 conference, the participants from Ukraine had the opportunity to expand their knowledge and get acquainted with interesting thematic places in Krakow that are closely related to their profession and scientific activities.

One of such places was the Geological Museum of Krakow, which presents unique collections of minerals, fossils and other geological exhibits. By visiting the museum, students were able to deepen their knowledge of the geological history of the Earth and the diversity of its natural resources.

An unforgettable experience was provided by an excursion to the Wieliczka Salt Mines, which for centuries were one of the most important industrial centres in Poland. Today, the mines have been transformed into a unique museum where you can see underground chambers and mines, salt sculptures, and learn about the history of salt mining and its importance for the development of the region.

Recently, a Polytechnic scientist became a participant of the Erasmus+ mobility programme at the Timisoara University of Technology, and the future translator told us about her participation in the Polish grant programme.
