More than 1300 translators from all over the world – from Santiago, Denver and Dubai, to Snanghai and Poltava – gathered for the Translation Day's special 30-hour mega-marathon-event.
The international specialists discussed the development of the simultaneous and consecutive interpreting during the pandemic, exchanged professional lifehacks and practical experience.
The participant of the event, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor of the Germanic Philology and Translation Department of our university Anna Pavelieva often took part in webinars by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and shared her knowledge with the students and teachers of the department. During the marathon she learned a lot about the peculiarities of translation in different fields, the most modern programs of automatic translation and about the online interpretation platforms most often used by professionals.
“I was impressed by the large number of incredibly interesting presentations. The translators from all over the world – who worked in various fields, such as sign language interpretation, theatrical interpretation, medical and technical translation – shared their experience and gave practical pieces of advice to colleagues.
“The participants were commenting on the presentations in the chat and wrote their questions, and after the end of their speech the speakers answered the questions. The atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed. Some participants just watched the conference walking with their children in a park, some were sitting in a pub in Munich, some were spending time in nature. It was just as interesting to observe the participants of the conference as it was to listen to the presentations. For example, while a speaker from Chili was talking about the professional unions of interpreters and translators and the websites allowing to find job easily, you could see on the participants panel how a team of interpreters was enjoying beer in a German pub. At the same time, everyone was listening to the speakers attentively and asked good questions,” Anna Pavelieva said.
The teacher will use the knowledge she received in practice and share the information with her students in interpretation and translation classes.
Two Zoom rooms were organized during the most active hours – the European daytime – for participants to communicate and discuss the presentations. All the presentations of the event will be available on the BP Translation Conferences website on October 20 for those, who couldn’t join the conference.
The BP (Business and Practice) Translation Conferences organization was created in 2007 for holding professional translation conferences and started gathering thousands of participants online since 2013.
2020 became game-changing for the professional translation field, as the COVID-19 pandemics contributed to developing a new type of interpreting - remote interpreting - and to the growth of demand for written translation in different languages.
Since the beginning of the lockdown, the number of online webinars, workshops and conferences in interpreting has grown rapidly, and the number of participants from all over the world has done so, too, because in terms of the lockdown, it is much easier to take part in such events, since you don’t have to leave your work and your home.
