Professor Leonid Storozhenko passed away

We are saddened to announce that Leonid STOROZHENKO, an outstanding scientist, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, Academician of the Engineering Academy of Ukraine and the Academy of Construction of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Construction and Civil Engineering, Educational and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management, Honored Worker of the University passed away at the age of 90.

Professor Leonid Storozhenko passed away

On December 17, 2021, 89-year-old scientist Leonid Ivanovych Storozhenko passed away. He devoted his entire professional life to the preparation of qualified civil engineers, young scientists, the formation of not only their practical and theoretical knowledge, but also their worldview. Thanks to life experience, fundamental knowledge and exceptional pedagogical skills, the professor has educated more than one generation of students.

The farewell ceremony and funeral will take place on Monday, December 20:

Leonid Ivanovych Storozhenko's academic career began in 1957.  He taught at Poltava Polytechnic for over 35 years.

Under his leadership, a scientific school "Research and implementation in the construction of reinforced concrete structures" was created, widely known in Ukraine and abroad, which is engaged in large-scale research on the calculation, design and implementation of high-efficiency reinforced concrete structures.  On the basis of the scientific school, the Ministry of Regional Construction of Ukraine has established a subcommittee on research and standardization of reinforced concrete structures at Poltava Polytechnic.

For the work "High-efficiency technologies and complex structures in industrial and civil construction", developed on the basis of this scientific school, the team of scientists – Rector, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Oleksandr Onyshchenko (posthumously), Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Serhii Pichuhin, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Oleksandr Semko and Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Leonid Storozhenko in 2011 were awarded the State Prize in Science and Technology.  The laureates were personally awarded by Academician, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Borys Paton.

Within the framework of the scientific school during its existence, 9 doctoral and 60 candidate dissertations have been defended in our university, more than 600 scientific papers have been published, including 30 monographs, textbooks and manuals.  The works of the school participants are defended by 65 copyright certificates and patents. 

For 30 years in a row, Professor Leonid Storozhenko headed the specialized Academic Council for the defense of doctoral dissertations.  Under his direct scientific guidance, more than fifty candidates of technical sciences and 7 doctors of technical sciences defended their dissertations.  In total, more than 250 candidates and doctors of technical sciences defended at the special council, and many of this community of scientists remained to work at the university.  Leonid Ivanovych was also a full member of the Academy of Construction of Ukraine and the Engineering Academy of Ukraine, a member of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine.

In addition to scientific and pedagogical activities, the professor was engaged in literary work and became a famous writer, member of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine, winner of the Poltava Regional Prize named after I.P.  Kotlyarevsky for his significant contribution and popularization of the Ukrainian language in society.  Creative heritage consists of stories and plays.

For special merits to the Ukrainian people Leonid Storozhenko was awarded the Honorary Diploma of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (2010), as well as numerous awards for many years of hard work, significant personal contribution to national education, preparation of highly qualified specialists, fruitful scientific and pedagogical activities – the Badge of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine "Petro Mohyla" (2010), of Science of Ukraine "Petro Mohyla" (2010), the Badge of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine "For Scientific Achievements" (2010), the Badge of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine "For Scientific and Recent Achievements" (2017), the Diploma of Poltava Regional Council, the Diploma of Poltava City Council, university honors and the title of Honored Worker.

Since 2017, he has received a state lifelong scholarship as an outstanding scientist.

Professor Leonid Ivanovych Storozhenko will remain in everyone's memory as a kind, bright, sensitive person.  This is a great loss for science, for family, relatives, and all close people, whom he helped in life.
