A second-year student majoring in 035 Philology of Poltava Polytechnic, Inna Vasylieva became a scholarship holder of the Czech government and studied Czech at the Summer School of Slavonic Studies in Poděbrady from 1 to 26 July 2024.

It should be recalled that in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic of 2022, the Government of the Czech Republic awarded 8 state scholarships to Ukrainian citizens in 2024 to study Czech language, literature, culture and history at the Summer School of Slavonic Studies.

It is nice to note that two of the 8 scholarships were awarded to representatives of Poltava Polytechnic, namely a second-year student majoring in 035 Philology, Inna Vasylieva, and this year’s graduate of Master’s degree in 035 Philology, editor-translator of the Press Centre sector of the media centre, Sofiia Dmytriuk.

Student Inna Vasylieva shares her impressions of the programme:

“It was an extraordinary, unforgettable experience that gave me the opportunity to get to know the Czech Republic and its rich culture. The scholarship I received covered a month of tuition, meals and accommodation at the Summer School of Slavonic Studies in Poděbrady. While participating in the programme, I met representatives of many countries from around the world – America, China, Germany, Italy, France, Finland, Mongolia, Korea, and the UK. All the teachers, organisers and participants of this programme were very friendly and helpful whenever needed. It was very nice to feel their support for Ukraine.

The language course in Poděbrady was very intensive and busy; every day from Monday to Friday we were taught Czech. As I had not participated in such programmes before, I chose the A1 level. It wasn’t difficult at all, because the teachers explained everything very clearly, and after a few days of studying, I could tell people about myself in Czech. Every day, after the main classes, we had a lunch break, and then there were various activities. I especially liked the lecture on astronomy followed by sky observations. We also had the opportunity to get together and watch Czech films in the original language with subtitles.

On weekends, I had free time, which I spent visiting Prague. One hundred hours of Czech, trips to Konopiště Castle, Kutná Hora, Prachov Rocks, Nymburk, a Czech evening, a visit to the Wolman Villa in Čekalovice, workshops, interesting lectures and many other activities left an indelible mark on my memory.

Upon completion of the course, we received the respective certificates. It was a chance not only to expand my language skills, but to delve into the history, traditions and everyday life of the Czech Republic as well. My time in Poděbrady was full of unforgettable impressions and discoveries that enriched my life and I definitely plan to return there. I would like to express my gratitude to Coordinator of International Cooperation of Poltava Polytechnic Anna Pavelieva for her help in the paperwork, answering all my questions and constant support.”
