According to the current laws of Ukraine, the Academic Board of a university should include seven representatives of the students’ self-government, the president and vice-president of the student parliament, the heads of student councils of education and research institutes and faculties. The President of the Student Parliament Oleksandr Lytvynenko presented his work from the moment of his election at the end of 2019.
“The Student Parliament is an efficient body representing students’ interests, taking part in managing the higher education institution, solving the problems of educational process organization, research activity, scholarships, spare time organization, health care, and various social problems for the students. The main fields of concern of the students’ self-government bodies include holding mass culture and sport events, promoting research activity, participation in charity and art activities. The budget of the students’ self-government bodies in 2020 is almost a quarter million hryvnias,” Oleksandr Lytvynenko said.
The self-government encourages students to participate in scientific activity, take part in the scientific clubs, conduct research and present its results at all-Ukrainian and international scientific and practical conferences, participate in all-Ukrainian academic contests and competitions in the studied subjects. There is a scientific students’ union, which contributes to the promotion of science among the talented youth. Thanks to the active support of the administration of Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic and the Rector, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko, the students participate in the leading specialized conference and academic exchange programs.
Over this academic year, the students of four education and research institutes and two faculties brought 64 winning places. Four students, Ruslana Siora, Anatolii Deriuha, Yelyzaveta Pinchuk and Bohdan Kostenko became absolute winners of all-Ukrainian student research competitions in their specializations.
“Even the lockdown did not stop our students from participating in the 72nd Scientific Conference of Professors, Teachers, Academic Staff, Post-Graduates and Students of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” and the competition from the educational platform IPL for the best oil and gas idea,” the Head of the Student Parliament added.
Three students of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Dmytro Kliuchka, Mykhailo Krendych and Anastasiia Havrylko became experts of the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance.
The students’ self-government of the university actively cooperates with the Students’ Sport Association of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Federation of Youth Sport, developing the youth sport movement. Polytechnic hosts two sport sections; students can do 27 kinds of sports with experienced coaches.
“Polytechnic students are regular winners at numerous regional and all-Ukrainian championships in cybersport, tennis, football, handball, volleyball, sport billiards. This year, the sport billiards team made their first appearance at the Championship of Ukraine in the sport billiards and won the second place. This became possible thanks to the sport billiards club headed by the world champion in sport billiards Anastasiia Kovalchuk, and the excellent sport facilities of National University ‘Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic’,” Oleksandr Lytvynenko commented.
In winter this year, the students of the Faculty of Sports, the members of the Student Parliament and the Students’ Union did practical training at the sport and health complex “Smerichka”. It was possible thanks to the cooperation of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” and Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University, as well as with the support of the union organizations.
“The lockdown limitations became a positive motivation for finding new communication ways. The students’ self-government held various challenges and a flashmob, involving students in doing sports, science and other interesting activities. We have also ensured the protection of students’ rights for scholarships and awards for achievements,” Oleksandr Lytvynenko noted.
The Student Parliament developed a so-called “success calculator”, that is a form for calculating the qualitative indicators of educational achievements and the participation in the university life, which actually influence the size of the scholarship.
“We act in accordance with the rules of awarding academic scholarships of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, approved by the Academic Board and the Student Parliament of university. The rating mark is calculated in the following way; the points for community, sport, scientific and research activity are added to the grade point average for the academic achievements. To receive the rating mark, we multiply the grade point average by the index 0.9 and add all the extracurricular activities. The additional points are within the range of 0 to 100, students receive them from the self-government, and the main argument for giving them is the sport awards, diplomas and certificates for participation in conferences, the presentations and the collections of conference materials. The criteria of students’ participation in the university life are confirmed by the heads of the student councils of appropriate education and research institutes and faculties,” the representative of students’ self-government Dmytro Kliuchka explained.
Usually the applications for the additional points are submitted to the students’ self-government bodies by the students personally, but his semester, due to the lockdown limitations and for the students’ comfort, the Student Parliament introduced the procedure of submitting the applications online.
“The filled form is processed by the students’ self-government. Due to the lockdown limitations, the students have been given three weeks for submitting the applications and we have a week to process them. Students receive an e-mail stating that their application is received. If they do not receive such a message, they have to immediately contact the self-government bodies,” Dmytro Kliuchka emphasized.
“We are glad that every year there are more and more young, eager and ambitious students who represent themselves and university in the scientific, art and social fields. It is incredibly pleasant to mention the efficiency of the students’ self-government. We are proud that the Student Parliament and the Students’ Union Committee are joining efforts in organizing and holding the large-scale student projects,” Rector, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko commented.
The University Academic Board approved the report of the President of the Student Parliament and supported the initiatives planned for fall.
