The Minister of Education of the Republic of Ireland supports Ukraine

The Minister of Education and Science Serhii Shkarlet held online meetings with Minister of Education of the Republic of Ireland Norma Foley and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Ireland Larysa Herasko.

"The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has enlisted the important support of the relevant ministries of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Italy, the Hellenic Republic, as well as the Republic of Poland in the fight against unprecedented aggression by the Russian Federation. In connection with the unprecedented manifestation of Russian aggression, we ask the Republic of Ireland to officially condemn the actions of the Russian Federation and express support for Ukraine," – pointed out Serhii Shkarlet.

In addition, the Minister appealed with a request to immediately:

  • impose strict restrictions on educational and scientific activities of institutions and organizations of the aggressor country;
  • prohibit access of scientific and educational institutions of the Russian Federation, their employees and those receiving education of the aggressor country to international sources of funding, mobility programs, any forms of cooperation in the field of education and science;
  • stop the implementation of joint educational, scientific, research programs and projects;
  • suspend investment and grant support for the implementation of educational and scientific projects with the participation of the aggressor country representatives;
  • review the policy of cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and relevant state bodies of countries that have supported the armed aggression against Ukraine.

Ms. Foley assured of absolute solidarity and support for the Ukrainian people and Ukraine.

The Minister noted that additional places for children's education and working groups have already been set up in educational institutions to support and accompany them.

The Republic of Ireland stands ready to fully assist and do everything possible to provide the temporarily evacuated citizens of Ukraine with all necessary conditions, as well as to create jobs, including for teachers.

"Together with the Embassy of Ukraine, we will continue to work towards supporting Ukraine and finding ways to provide possible assistance to our citizens who were forced to leave the country due to the brutal aggression of the Russian Federation," – said Ms. Norma Foley.

The Minister thanked for the support of the Republic of Ireland and expressed hope for further assistance to the Ukrainian government in the process of restoring the educational and scientific infrastructure and the functioning of the educational and scientific sphere of Ukraine.

Ukraine's cooperation with the Republic of Ireland in the field of education is governed by the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ireland of 8 February 2006, according to which the parties promote direct connections between educational institutions of both countries; encourage direct cooperation in the field of science and research between universities and research institutions of both countries; and promote cooperation in the fields of education, research and science through participation in joint projects within UNESCO, the Council of Europe and the European Union.
