On the basis of Multidisciplinary Classical National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, with the full support of the Gender Centre of Poltava Polytechnic, a training “Fundamentals of Effective Communication in the Educational Process” was held for the police officers who will soon be acting as the officers of the Educational Security Service. It should be recalled that recently, a workshop for officers of the Educational Security Service on suicide prevention in communities was held at Poltava Polytechnic.

Experienced instructors, scientists of the Department of Psychology and Pedagogy of Poltava Polytechnic – Candidate of Psychological Sciences, Associate Professor Viktoriia Shevchuk and Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Lesia Klevaka, conducted an insightful and information-rich event aimed at giving the participants the necessary knowledge and practical skills to respond flexibly to a variety of situations in the educational environment.

As part of the training, law enforcement officers worked out the difficulties and barriers to communication with modern youth, and through interactive exercises, they were convinced of the importance of establishing verbal contacts with the audience. The participants also noted that this experience will certainly come in handy in the near future, as they plan to use the techniques they learned together with the instructors in their professional activities.

The training programme consisted of theoretical and practical blocks, the individual components of which were closely intertwined. In particular, the participants considered in detail the main factors that positively influence and significantly facilitate the communication process. These include attraction (the attractiveness of one communication partner to another), the related halo effect (when perceiving an unfamiliar person, a general positive impression of that person leads to positive assessments of unknown qualities of that person, and vice versa, a general negative impression of a person leads to negative assessments of unknown qualities) and the edge effect (information that is communicated at the beginning and end is best remembered).

The participants, together with the instructors, reinforced the theoretical aspects discussed during the consideration and analysis of the proposed communication situations, when police officers in pairs, changing the distance between themselves and the interlocutor, tried to convey certain semantic meanings in individual messages.

Such exercises made it possible to demonstrate that communication is the exchange of information and certain emotions on an equal footing, and that changing the distance or dominating the communication partner, on the contrary, leads to the creation of additional obstacles.

The police officers were particularly interested in the tasks where they had to argue their own opinion or suggest ways out of a situation in an educational institution.

Upon completion, the participants received certificates and shared their impressions. According to them, the workshops at National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” helped them to acquire new knowledge and skills necessary for working with modern youth, so they were looking forward to new practice-oriented events.

Recently, the Centre for Veteran Development has been providing cultural and educational support to veterans to help them reintegrate into civilian life.

Also, on the second anniversary of the ratification of the Istanbul Convention, the university discussed changes in legislation and combating violence, presented a unique project on the way to implementing the Tactile Tour guide for barrier-free events, and the annual report of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights was presented on the main stage of Poltava Polytechnic for the second time.

It should be recalled that earlier, a new project “Safety Ambassadors” was launched in the Poltava region, Poltava Polytechnic joined the “Coalition 1325 Poltava Region”, and the Gender Centre of Poltava Polytechnic presented its activities at the first scheduled meeting of the “Coalition 1325 Poltava Region”.
