To produce such a number of faceshields, the staff was working with no days-off, and the college performed the printing for a few days non-stop.
The Hospital Chief Doctor Hryhorii Oksak supported the initiative, so the Surgery, Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology Departments received 30 faceshields each.
“There is a strong possibility of patients and medical workers contracting the infection. Although the hospital is not in the list of facilities for COVID-19 patients to be placed into first of all, the medics are risking every day because there is the risk to meet an infected patients without knowing about it. That is why I am thankful to the university for the help,” Hryhorii Oksak said.
The Head of the Ophthalmology Department Olena Zaludiak told us that people often come to her department by themselves, and the patients with eye injuries can go past the reception, so the protection is really necessary for doctors.
The importance of protection was also mentioned by the Head of the Otolaryngology Department Mykhailo Bezeha and the Head of the Surgery Department Andrii Kaliuzhka. The practicing surgeons will want some additional design improvements after a certain time of operation.
Doctor of Medicine, the Head of the Department of Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology of Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy, Professor Serhii Bezshapochnyi emphasized that it is the surgery doctors who are at special risk, because the WHO reports show that they form the majority among infected medical workers, and most of them are otolaryngologists.
“The university has a long history of cooperation with this hospital in different fields, particularly, we performed technical examination of their buildings and constructions, provided consultation during restoration or construction works and so on. We decided to extend our cooperation for science and innovations to help and contribute to saving medical workers’ health. Our university delegation has passed the personal protection means to the medics with great gratitude and respect for saving the lives of thousands of region citizens! We are proud to have a chance to express our care for them. Hopefully after the pandemic declines and the lockdown limitations are gone, I will be able to shake hands with every doctor personally!” Rector Volodymyr Onyshchenko commented.
