On June 7, the Day of Nature Reserve Workers, the meeting of the jury of the Olena Bairak Award of Poltava Regional Council took place, as Poltava Regional Council announced.
This year, the Olena Bairak Award is given for the first time. It was founded in December last year to contribute to socially important ecological community initiatives of Poltava region citizens, develop ecological education and enhance the level of ecological consciousness and culture of the population.
“This is the only award to be given not only to the winner, but also to three other candidates in each nomination, so that we give the first, the second and the third awards correspondingly,” the Head of the Award Jury, the First Deputy Head of Poltava Regional Council Yevhen Kholod commented.
In the nomination of Ecological Education, the winner of the First Award is Nataliia Smoliar, Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs of the Regional Landscape Park “Nyzhniovorsklianskyi”, PhD in Biology, Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Ecology and Nature Management of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”.
Olena Bairak (1957-2018) was a scientist, Doctor of Biology, Professor, member of the Council of Botanical Gardens and Dendrological Parks of Ukraine. She was the author of 300 scientific and 50 educational and methodological publications, including 15 monographs. She did a lot for nature preservation in Ukraine, developing the reserves, and ecological education of her compatriots. She participated in creating more than 150 nature reserves of Poltava region. She is also famous for words and music for more than 50 songs about nature.
Awarding will be held in Poltava Local Lore Museum, which has a collection dedicated to Olena Bairak, on August, 7 - the scientist’s birthday.
