"ViA's Research Evening 2024": Polytechnic scientists shared their own achievements at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences

Scientists of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Land Management of Poltava Polytechnic Olha Harkava and Liudmyla Shevchenko took part in “ViA's Research Evening 2024” at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, where they presented their own scientific achievements in the field of frame structural systems of buildings and landscape and spatial organization of Poltava.

"ViA's Research Evening 2024": Polytechnic scientists shared their own achievements at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences

The scientists of Educational and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic", PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor of Building Structures Department Olha Harkava and PhD in Architecture, Associate Professor of Building Architecture and Design Department Liudmyla Shevchenko were invited to participate in the traditional “ViA's Research Evening 2024”, which was held at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences.

The invitation to take part in this large-scale scientific and educational event was the result of preliminary agreements between scientists of Poltava Polytechnic and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences Aija Cunska about the directions of joint scientific work and the ways of its realization between Ukrainian and Latvian universities. The foundations of this cooperation were laid by scientists of Poltava Polytechnic during their participation in the Erasmus+ KA 171 international academic mobility program in the academic year 2023/2024, which was held at the leading Latvian partner university.

It should be noted that “ViA's Research Evening 2024” is held monthly at the Socio-technical Systems Engineering Institute of Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences to exchange scientific opinions, review current research results of the university's graduate students, and discuss current problems and challenges of science. The online format of the event included 20-minute presentations by the participants and 10-minute sessions of open questions from students, postgraduates and the university's scientific and pedagogical staff. This allows participants to undergo training before defending their research work, make the necessary adjustments, and improve it with the advice of scientists.

At the event, Olha Harkava, Associate Professor of Building Structures, presented the results of her doctoral dissertation "Synthesis of Frame Structural Systems of Buildings and the Basics of Calculating Their Elements", which was written under the supervision of Doctor of Engineering, Professor, Head of Building Structures Department of Poltava Polytechnic Andrii Pavlikov. In her report, the scientist focused on the urgent problem of restoring the housing stock of our country. The solution to this problem is possible with the use of a prefabricated frame beamless capillary-free structural system of buildings, which allows erecting buildings at a speed 40% higher than traditional structural systems.

In addition, interest in the prefabricated beamless frame is driven by a number of its advantages when used in construction: freedom of architectural and planning solutions, wide possibilities for redevelopment of premises, use of energy-efficient materials in enclosing structures, rapid recovery of construction industrialization, etc. This structural system is the optimal solution for the construction of both high-rise buildings and cottage-type houses. Given its undoubted advantages, the methodological complex for calculating the bearing capacity of a prefabricated frame beamless structural system of buildings and its elements developed in this thesis is relevant and in demand by civil engineers.

Researcher Olha Harkava also presented the results of experimental studies of reinforced concrete columns of the frame structural system of buildings made using waste from stone crushing plants, namely granite screenings. This research area was of particular interest to our Latvian colleagues who conduct research on ecological  ("green") construction.

Associate Professor Liudmyla Shevchenko's presentation was devoted to the peculiarities of the landscape and spatial organization of the city of Poltava (Ukraine).

The researcher began her virtual acquaintance with the spatial organization of our city with the historical background - the topographic and landscape basis, which, together with the further development of urban planning, contributed to the formation of the unique spatial structure of Poltava. The beginning of the nineteenth century was marked by the city's acquisition of the status of the center of the Poltava province, which gave rise to fundamental urban planning transformations and the implementation of significant architectural projects. The result of these actions was the introduction of a radial planning scheme of the city with a central core - an open square with ensemble buildings around the perimeter. The ray system of streets gave rise to new directions of the city's development and connected the central core with its historical parts, and primarily with the Cathedral Square. The urban planning period of Poltava at that time was characterized by axial perspectives, street orientation on dominants, and the establishment of new dominants in the creation of streets. Such a unique spatial organization of the city made it possible to preserve the achievements of previous centuries, take into account the peculiarities of the topographic basis and organically incorporate the landscape potential into its structure.

In her report, Lyudmyla Shevchenko also focused on another expressive topographic point of Poltava, Instytutska Hora, and its dominant object, National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic", briefly analyzing the structure of the university and the place of the architectural community in it.

Lyudmyla Shevchenko's presentation resonated with Marija Katrīna Dambe, who demonstrated the landscape planning structure of the city of Valmiera (Latvia). According to the Latvian colleague, our cities have common features in terms of landscape and spatial organization, further development prospects in the direction of preserving natural resources, and unique historical corners of the city. It is in these areas that further cooperation between leading European universities is possible.

Marija Katrīna Dambe, a lecturer at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, initiated a discussion on "Interdisciplinarity in sustainable construction", during which the scientists found ways of further cooperation related to sustainable development, reuse of building materials, and other aspects of construction and architecture.

Oskars Java, PhD, Director of Socio-technical Systems Engineering Institute, invited everyone who was interested to join the preparation of a grant project application concerning the collection and recycling of plastic waste and the remnants of fishing nets that pollute the coasts of many EU countries, in particular, the Baltic Sea coast in Latvia.

It should be reminded that participation in a large-scale scientific and educational event is a real case of fruitful cooperation between Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (Latvia) and National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" (Ukraine), which started with the participation of Poltava Polytechnic scientists Olha Harkava and Liudmyla Shevchenko in the Erasmus+ KA171 international academic mobility program in February, 2024.

Previously, teachers and students of Polytechnic became participants in the hackathon on the basis of the Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences.
