World Day for Safety and Health at Work Celebrated with a Scientific Event at Polytechnic

On April 28, National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” held a scientific round table “Foreseeing, Preparing, and Reacting to a Crisis: Let Us Invest in Stable Occupational Safety Systems Now”. Almost 200 participants of the event discussed economic and social aspects of workers’ efficiency and the creation of safe and comfortable work conditions.

On the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the academicians of Education and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management, students of Education and Research Institute of Oil and Gas and Faculty of Humanities of Poltava Polytechnic delivered thematic presentations at the joined scientific round table under this year’s motto offered by the International Labour Organization: “Anticipate, prepare and respond to crises: Invest now in resilient occupational safety and health systems”.

During the event, the scientists of our university and the specialists of the State Labor Department in Poltava Region discussed the modern methods of fire extinguishing in oil and oil product tanks, the influence of the light level on the efficiency of work, the causes of occupational injuries in the construction field, the social and economic aspect of occupational health and safety. In total, more than 180 participants joined the discussion. It was moderated by Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Infrastructure Development of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Anatolii Martynenko.

The participants were greeted by Rector of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic", Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko and Head of State Labor Department in Poltava Region Serhii Shcherbak, who mentioned the importance of close cooperation of a higher education institution with a state organization in solving the pressing problems of occupational health and safety and creating comfortable conditions of studying and working.

“Almost 200 participants are united with this round table, in which scientists of the Construction and Civil Engineering Department and students of different specializations delivered scientific presentations about different aspects about occupational health and safety. The topics covered economic and social aspects of workers’ efficiency, the creation of safe and comfortable work conditions, the issue of occupational injuries in the construction field etc. I am thankful to Head of State Labor Department in Poltava region Serhii Shcherbak for taking part and mentioning the importance of our cooperation in finding the solution for the pressing problems of occupational health and safety, as well as in creating comfortable and safe conditions at university. Our university pays a great attention to these aspects.  I am also thankful to the employees of the department for their contribution and practical help in holding attestation and certification of work places and laboratories of our university. I would like to mention that the department helped to hold events and undertake measures on occupational health and safety at Myrhorod Art and Industrial College named after M. V. Hohol. Without doubts, I can say that the human health has once again become the priority for administrations in terms of the lockdown. And as 2021 is called at National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” the year of social protection of university’s workers and students, the discussions about the work conditions and their safety are even more relevant. As a result of the round table, we have reached agreement with the State Labor Department to bring our cooperation to a new level and sign a contract on cooperation and partnership. Together we will certainly achieve more!” Rector of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko said.

Poltava Polytechnic has been cooperating with the State Labor Department in Poltava region headed by Serhii Shcherbak for a long time. The workers of the department hold systematic training for university’s academicians and workers with appropriate certificates awarded, initiate round tables at Polytechnic.

“In order to once again bring people’s attention to the workers’ pressing problems, the National Labor Organization decided to celebrate this date at the state level in 2003. In accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine, we started celebrating the Occupational Health and Safety Day in Ukraine, bringing flowers to the memorials of the deceased workers of Horishni Plavni and holding joined events. It is a great pleasure that National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” pays considerable attention to the occupational health and safety, and the representatives of State Labor Department traditionally take part in the university's events and powerful oil and gas forums. Despite the new challenges connected with the pandemic and the online format of our round table, I am sure that our communication with be interesting and productive. We will discuss the current problems of this field. We plan to sign the contract on partnership and cooperation with Poltava Polytechnic, according to which we undertake the responsibility to realize joined initiatives. I wish that you have a fruitful meeting, health and inspiration!” Head of the State Labor Department of Poltava region Serhii Shcherbak said.

The program of the round table included presentations of scientists and students of Education and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management, Education and Research Institute of Oil and Gas, Faculty of Humanities of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”.

  • “Preventing the consequences of the unsealing of steel oil and gas pipelines” (Oksana Bondar, student of group 401TZ of Education and Research Institute of Oil and Gas at Poltava Polytechnic, scientific advisor Olena Stepova, Doctor of Engineering, Associate Professor, Head of Applied Ecology and Nature Management Department);
  • “Occupational health and safety at National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic"” (Mykhailo Turchenko, Head of the Occupational Health and Safety Office);
  • “The influence of light level on the efficiency of work” (Tetiana Bilokon, student of group 201HF of Faculty of Humanities, scientific advisor Oleksandr Zyma, PhD, Associate Professor of Construction and Civil Engineering Department);
  • “The condition and the causes of occupational injuries in the construction field” (Maryna Mykhailova, student of group 202HF of Faculty of Humanities, Scientific advisor Roman Pakhomov, PhD, Associate Professor of Construction and Civil Engineering Department);
  • “Occupational health and safety: social and economic aspects” (Kateryna Pochtakova, student of group 201HD of Faculty of Humanities, scientific advisor Roman Pakhomov, PhD, Associate Professor of Construction and Civil Engineering Department).

Each presentation was followed by a discussion. The participants watched a video and presentation prepared by the Occupational Health and Safety Office of Poltava Polytechnic. Head of the office Mykhailo Turchenko shared the further professional plans.

At the end of the scientific round table, the participants decided to prolong the fruitful cooperation with the State Labor Department in Poltava region in order to create safe conditions for work and study and for efficient professional activities.
