Specialties of the Department of Applied Ecology and Environmental Management

The modern world has its own advantages and peculiarities, which are determined primarily by profound and rapid changes affecting all spheres of life on the planet and are related to the most pressing problem of nature conservation for every state and person.

"Ecology" means "the science of home" in Greek. The study of ecology and all environmental issues is based on a common understanding of many extremely important processes and events taking place in the environment around us. Therefore, there is now a need for intellectual and spiritual education of each person aimed at forming a new ecological outlook based on the principle of ecological harmony and unity awareness of the environment and human beings.

In order for a person to feel like a part of the Universe and to be comprehensively prepared for environmental activities in any sphere of economic activity, it is necessary to educate and form a new ecological personality. Its main task will be to preserve and restore nature for existing and future generations.

Acquiring such training is possible right now, when environmental education is becoming one of the most relevant areas in our country.

Taking into account the requirements of the time and the relevance of environmental education, the Department of Applied Ecology and Nature Management of Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic trains specialists in Ecology, Environmental Protection and Balanced Nature Management in a three-stage system: Bachelor, Specialist and Master.

Today, the department is one of the centers for training specialists in Poltava region in these specialties:

Educational and professional programs of the bachelor's degree

101 "Ecology"

183 "Environmental Protection Technologies" under the educational program "Renewable Heat and Power, Alternative Fuels and Environmental Protection".

Educational and professional program of the educational degree "Master"

183 "Environmental Protection Technologies"

Students are trained for a bachelor's degree for 4 years, during which they master knowledge and skills in 45 specialized disciplines through lectures, practical, seminars, laboratories, course projects and papers, calculation and graphic works, and individual hours of work.

The usual schedule of classes is accompanied by excursions to the leading environmental institutions of the region and industrial enterprises that pay great attention to solving environmental issues.

Practical training after each year of study in state institutions of the region, at industrial enterprises, firms and companies enriches and deepens the acquired knowledge.

An interesting and important part of student life is scientific activity, which allows students to deepen their environmental education in an individually chosen relevant scientific and practical area in a team with other students or individually under the guidance of a teacher.

A trained specialist-ecologist with a bachelor's degree can fully work in state and scientific organizations, industrial enterprises and other institutions of the region and hold the following positions:

  • nature protection inspector,
  • laboratory technician (biological research,
  • laboratory assistant of a scientific unit (other areas of scientific research).

The master's degree program lasts for 1.5 years, at the end of which masters defend their qualification works.

As a result, masters receive a diploma and the opportunity to work:

  • as specialists in the State environmental protection bodies: regional environmental protection department, environmental inspection, regional water resources department, regional water management department, regional housing and communal services department, regional land resources department;
  • specialists in departments of district and oblast state administrations and advisors to district councils of deputies on ecology, environmental protection and balanced nature management;
  • environmental specialists at enterprises and organizations;
  • employees of research institutions in the field of natural sciences;
  • employees of laboratories (enterprises, management bodies, metrology and certification centers).

The main primary positions that can be held by a master ecologist are:

  • environmental inspector,
  • laboratory technician (biological research),
  • junior state inspector,
  • state inspector, engineer inspector,
  • laboratory technician (chemical and physical research),
  • consultant in the apparatus of state authorities,
  • customs inspector, design technician,
  • technologist
  • laboratory technician
  • researcher
  • head of the laboratory,
  • head of the environmental protection department,
  • teacher of a higher education institution,
  • teacher of a vocational school.

In recent years, environmental training of engineers has become increasingly important, primarily focused on providing industrial enterprises, organizations and government agencies of various levels with high-quality specialists. To this end, the department trains masters in Environmental Protection Technologies.

The main tasks set by the department in training masters of environmental engineering are: providing in-depth knowledge of the environmental aspects of production activities of enterprises in various industries; acquiring skills in environmental monitoring of all environmental components, skills in environmental assessment and environmental inspection; mastering methods of analysis and selection of optimal environmental management solutions.

A master with a degree in Environmental Engineering can hold the following primary positions:

  • environmental engineer,
  • engineer for the natural ecosystems reproduction,
  • engineer on technogenic and ecological safety,
  • engineer for the natural ecosystems protection,
  • controlling engineer,
  • laboratory engineer,
  • ecologist,
  • environmental expert,
  • consultant (in a certain field of engineering),
  • Researcher (in the field of engineering),
  • researcher-consultant (in the field of engineering).

In 2022, within the cooperation framework between the Department of Applied Ecology and Environmental Management and the Department of Heat and Gas Supply, Ventilation and Heat Power Engineering, the training of specialists in the specialty 183 "Environmental Protection Technologies" of the bachelor's degree program "Renewable Heat and Power Engineering, Alternative Fuels and Environmental Protection" will begin.

A bachelor trained in this educational program is able to perform professional work:

  • engineer for technical diagnostics of boiler and turbine equipment;
  • ventilation engineer;
  • specialist in geosystems environmental monitoring;
  • Energy saving and energy efficiency expert;
  • Environmental protection engineer:
  • engineer on technogenic and ecological safety;
  • consultant on energy saving and energy efficiency;
  • Engineer for the reproduction of natural ecosystems, water resources use;
  • engineer for the protection of natural ecosystems;
  • laboratory assistant and technician related to chemical and physical research;
  • Heat engineering technician;
  • Technician for the operation of bioenergy installations;
  • Technician for the operation of wind power plants;
  • Technician for the operation of solar energy installations;
  • inspector of state technogenic and environmental supervision;
  • environmental technician;
