“Autumn School of a Young Scientist 3.0”: university teachers successfully complete their studies as part of a project from the British Council

Scientists of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” – Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation Anna Pavelieva and Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor of the Department of International Economic Relations and Tourism Iryna Levchenko underwent training as part of the “Autumn School of Young Scientist 3.0”, organized by the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine within the framework of the implementation of the British Council project “Active Citizens” and jointly with the public organization “International Development Foundation”. University teachers successfully mastered the course, completed the assigned tasks and received certificates of participation.

“Autumn School of a Young Scientist 3.0” was held with the support of the project “Strengthening Intersectoral Cooperation for Social Cohesion”, co-financed by the European Union and the British Council in Ukraine.

The training of young scientists from all corners of Ukraine took place in a remote format, on the Zoom platform, during November 1-6, 2022, and the goal of the School was to promote the formation of a young scientist as a socially conscious individual and an active member of the Ukrainian community.

Within the framework of the training, the invited experts told young scientists about the recognition of a young scientist in Ukraine in the format “I: identity and culture”, about the personality of a young scientist in Ukrainian society and opportunities and challenges for young scientists, discussed the understanding of the concepts, conditions and values of intercultural dialogue for young scientist. Special attention was paid to the ability to share views and beliefs as a key to dialogue. The scientists also listened to a practical lecture “Building a dialogue in the professional activity of a young scientist: life hacks for productive communication” and shared their impressions.

The participants of the “Autumn School of Young Scientist 3.0” studied the features of communication and methods of dialogue, analyzed the peculiarities and ability to listen, discussed the concept of generating respect for different points of view in the conditions of civil society constructions. The subject of the course “Peculiarities and differences of a scientist’s communication: pros, cons” was separately considered.

A lot of attention was paid to the discussions surrounding the formation of a young scientist in the community, within such important topics as “Community. A scientist is an active member of the community” along with “Community and the global public”. During the study of the outlined topic, the School participants listened to the lecture “Development of a young scientist in the community”.

An extremely relevant topic – “Effective project management” was considered separately, where the participants studied the concept of social action, basic methods of project planning and management, knowledge of the project cycle, and the possibilities of applying the capabilities of social action in the professional activity of a scientist.

Many discussions were sparked by the topic “Planning social action and implementing it in the community”, during which the participants listened to the lecture “Social action in the life of a scientist: necessity and challenges” and together thought about how to effectively develop their own social action project.

The participants discussed further possible ways of community development together with the facilitators Olesia Vashchuk and Andrii Izovita in the “world café”: forecasting the best options, discussing the place of the scientist in the community.

Work within the “Autumn School of a Young Scientist 3.0” included not only lecture material, but also discussions, debates, group work, and practical tasks. To consolidate the theoretical material, young scientists performed the exercises “The power of the question”, “Positive perception of differences”, “The meaning of facial expressions and gestures”, “Understanding the position, interests and needs of the community”, “Indicators of success”, “Working on the conflict”, “Envelope ideas” etc. The invited experts, together with the facilitators, shared practical experience and their own examples, which will allow the participants to apply the acquired knowledge in their scientific and professional activities.

“During the project, we gained tremendous experience, improved our practical skills, and talked with colleagues from other regions of our country. An unforgettable atmosphere of creative cooperation, dialogue, exchange of thoughts and ideas prevailed. Such meetings are extremely motivating, inspiring, and uplifting!

We will definitely share the received cases with our colleagues, since new knowledge is the key to joint success, small and large educational victories! We will look forward to new interesting projects from the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine,” – commented the project participant, head of the Council of Young Scientists of the Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogy of the Poltava Polytechnic, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation, Anna Pavelieva.

It is worth noting the fact that university teachers have repeatedly taken an active part in the work of the Young Scientist Schools from the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. According to them, such large-scale scientific and educational events make it possible to deepen certain knowledge, improve one's own soft skills, communicate with colleagues from other higher education institutions of Ukraine, and strengthen inter-university and inter-regional cooperation among scientists.

It should be recalled that in 2022, Polytechnic young scientists took an active part in the “Winter Online School of Volunteering for Young Scientists”, “Spring School of a Young Scientist 2.0”, and scientist Iryna Levchenko attended the “Summer School of a Young Scientist 3.0”.

Previously, the philologist successfully completed a course dedicated to the volunteer programs of the European Solidarity Corps and became a participant of the online school “I choose Ukrainian. 10 steps to victory”.
