Building scientists are researching a new technology that will allow buildings to be erected quickly

Scientists of the Department of Building Structures of the Educational and Research Institute of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Land Management of the Poltava Polytechnic are conducting an experiment within the framework of the study of reinforced concrete columns, which are used in the latest structural systems. The preparation for this experiment took 2 months and for almost three weeks the scientists will supervise the tests of the edifice.

Graduate of specialty 192 “Construction and Civil Engineering”, postgraduate student Bohdan Baryliak and Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, doctoral student of the Department of Building Structures Olha Harkava under the guidance of Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Building Structures, academician of the Academy of Construction of Ukraine Andrii Pavlikov are performing a unique experiment in the laboratory. Scientists study the columns used in the latest structural systems, in particular, they test the strength of reinforced concrete columns under the influence of oblique pressure on the example of structures used in modern capital-beamless systems. Sensors are embedded in the concrete structure, which allow one to record even the smallest changes in the structure, and unique equipment allows one to simulate various effects.

The postgraduate student is working on a dissertation study, the practicality of which will open up the possibility of building edifices quickly, which in times of martial law will provide an opportunity to provide housing for internally displaced persons. The speed of construction of such buildings is approximately 3 months (!), while for ordinary buildings it takes 2 years.

“Educational and Research Institute of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Land Management of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” trains specialists of a high engineering level to work in the construction industry. This is especially relevant now, when there is a need to overcome the problem of huge scales – the reconstruction of edifices and structures destroyed during the war. In laboratories, students and postgraduate students conduct experimental and laboratory research, as well as acquire practical skills and understanding of scientific phenomena and processes that occur in building structures. The experiment is the basis of human knowledge, the basis of confidence that one’s development is correct. They provide an opportunity to test one’s theoretical work.

Specialty 192 “Construction and Civil Engineering” is generally very practically oriented. It involves the entire complex of scientific knowledge and research related to edifices and structures. This specialty fully provides for a person and is in second place in terms of importance for their existence. Graduates of the construction profile of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” are highly valued not only in Ukraine, but also abroad,” – noted Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Building Structures Andrii Pavlikov.

For more than 60 years the department with a unique scientific school has been training highly qualified specialists, who have fundamental knowledge for designing, researching and creating new types of reinforced concrete and stone structures, and who are able to develop new technologies for manufacturing structures and conducting construction.

“Rebuilding Ukraine after the war is a priority and strategic task of a national scale. Even now, in the midst of hostilities, we are rebuilding roads and infrastructure. In the future, Ukraine should appear modern and innovative. This requires trained specialists, especially those of high-tech specialties. National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” has powerful scientific schools for training personnel in relevant specialties!

I am proud that my very first diploma of higher education testifies to the acquired qualification of a civil engineer!

Studying in this specialty gave the ability to structure not only knowledge, but to manage production processes as well. The acquired knowledge became a solid foundation on which I significantly expanded my scientific interest and mastered economic science. My doctoral dissertation is devoted to community development and investment attraction. Using the example of the development of the university's infrastructure, I vividly put its practical meaning into real life.

So I congratulate the future and already accomplished professionals in construction and civil engineering on the holiday! I wish you all the best for great work and success! We invite you to study! Let’s rebuild Ukraine together!” – commented the rector, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko.

At the beginning of this year, scientists of the Department of Building Structures published new manuals for students.

Previously, scientists and students of the Polytechnic presented scientific research in the field of operation and reconstruction of buildings and structures, and the scientist-architect became a co-author of the study of the architectural and urban planning heritage of the Kozel Region.
