University had been training specialists of economic specializations since the ‘90s, and as the statistics of graduate employment showed, most of them found jobs in the financial field and banking, but the general economic education did not fully meet the employers’ requirements. That is why it was necessary to create a unit for training specialists of financial and banking fields.
The newly formed finance department was a department of new kind: progressive, mobile, using new approaches to teaching and researching, and based on the main principle of combining theory with practical professional skills development. The financial system was developing and changing dynamically, and it is going through a global transformation now, but university offered relevant specializations taking into account today's tendencies.
From the first day and for 15 years after, the department was headed by Doctor of Economics, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko, Rector of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic", Honored Education Worker of Ukraine, Head of the Specialized Academic Board for PhD Theses Defense, Chief Editor of the Economy and Region journal. He had considerable experience of practical work in finance and banking, scientific papers and pedagogical skills, having been combining his job at one of the leading Ukrainian commercial banks and teaching activity at the moment of department foundation.
“20 years ago, our university was strengthened with another powerful scientific space, which had since trained hundreds of highly qualified specialists for Ukrainian financial system and dozens of scientists! I am proud to be the person who headed the team of initiative colleagues, and I put my experience and skills into the development of this department. I was glad to share my knowledge with students, as it was not described in the books available at that time. I am now focused on working with young scientists and on developing the school of thought further, since it has many achievements recognized at the state level.
“At the beginning of the department’s work, my task was to invite practicing experts to training and evaluating the future specialists, as well as building a high-quality dialog between the graduates and the employers. So we invited leading specialists of financial companies, state offices, commercial banks, insurance companies and the taxation service to teach the major subjects of our department. And we paid special attention to the development of academic mobility and welcomed European scientists to teach here. Our department opened wide opportunities for students, such as lecture courses from German professors Gunther Stoll and Ulrich Seiler, double diploma programs, internships at the best universities of Germany, Poland and the UK.
“Dear academic staff of the financial department, over more than ten years of our fruitful joined work while I headed the department, and over these two decades, the team has reached a great quality of education work and has established the department as a powerful scientific and educational space for training real professionals. I am thankful for your professionalism and hard work, and wish you inspiration for further achievements! Our motto remains the same: the quality of knowledge received today is the high quality of life tomorrow, the basis of comfortable life and professional growth!” Rector, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko congratulated the team of the department.
The department trains students of the specialization “Finance, Banking and Insurance” and such educational programs as “Finance, Banking and Insurance”, “Financial and Economic Safety Management”, “Banking”, “Accounting and Taxation” and “Business Taxation”.
Finance, Banking and Taxation Department gives diplomas to about 200 graduates of Bachelor's degree annually, and accepts practicing specialists of the finance sector, representatives of local self-government bodies and state government bodies for the Master's degree studies, where they can receive additional professional competences.
The department is always open for talented youth who want to receive deep and up-to-date knowledge. And the number of those wishing to get prestigious and relevant degrees is increasing with every passing year.
Students of the department take part in the double diploma programs with Polish and Chinese universities and can do internships at partner institutions in Germany and Poland.
The team of the department consists of united highly-qualified experts and scientists, who constantly improve their knowledge level, create and develop the modern finance and economic science under the charge of Doctor of Economics, Professor Liana Ptashchenko. The teaching staff is powerful and professional, including laureates of the State Award of Ukraine in Science and Engineering, the Award of the President of Ukraine for Young Scientists, winners of numerous prizes and authors of unique scientific and methodological works.
The strong scientific and creative potential of teachers and students of the department, popularity of the specializations among future students, active international and research activity - all this became keys to success of Finance, Banking and Taxation Department.
