From idea to implementation: Polytechnic scientists present a startup project at a hackathon for young scientists

On July 4-5, 2022, an intense two-day hackathon "Startups of young scientists: from idea to implementation" took place. About 60 interested persons registered to participate, 23 projects passed the expert selection, including the project of Poltava Polytechnic scientists. The authors of the selected projects had the opportunity to listen to a series of lectures by well-known speakers, exchange creative ideas, effective practical cases; work as a team and individually under the guidance of experienced mentors; as well as present their own business ideas and technologies to experts.

"I sincerely thank the young scientists who contribute to the innovative and economic development of the state. I am confident that the researchers' ideas will have practical results not only for the scientific potential of Ukraine, but also for other countries," – said Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Serhii Shkarlet.

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Education, Science and Innovation Serhii Babak, Director of the Ukrainian Startup Fund Pavlo Kartashov, and Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Olesia Vashchuk also addressed the hackathon participants with congratulatory words.

"The future lies in innovations in modern education and science. That is why it is so important for scientists and innovators to interact and be in constant dialogue. Even under martial law, such an information exchange platform should work, as it is an opportunity to share new ideas, proposals, solutions for the support and development of the ecosystem. Here, everyone can present their product or development, hear current business requests for popular scientific products and innovations, find partners to carry out joint projects, and get professional recommendations for improving their startups. I wish everyone productivity and success in the implementation of their ideas!" – said USF Director Pavlo Kartashov.

National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" was represented by Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Construction and Civil Engineering of the Educational and Research Institute of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Land Management Oleksandr Zyma and Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics, Entrepreneurship and Marketing of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law Andrii Skrylnyk, who developed the "B-parking" mobile application and showed how many issues it solves, in addition to the fact that it will become a convenient service for drivers. The scientists have improved their project of an innovative start-up, with which they became the bronze prize-winners of the "StartUP Poltava Region" entrepreneurship competition.

The large-scale scientific event took place in online mode, which did not prevent a constructive dialogue and a fruitful discussion between the participants and experts of the hackathon, and the "question-answer" format motivated the participants to constantly work on improving their own projects and to improve their own ideas.

During the first day, the participants learned about the formation of grant applications, access to the European market, the necessary conditions for investment in innovative projects and the usage of the Lean Canvas model in practice.

On the second day, the teams presented their projects.

The authors of startup projects shared their own vision of the most pressing problems of local community development, environmental protection, introduction of advanced technologies into the business environment, and solutions to issues related to the document flow of legal institutions and the infrastructure of adjacent territories.

A startup from Poltava Polytechnic scientists will solve the problems of congestion in the city's central streets, improve traffic safety, eliminate gaps in existing e-parking services, the lack of an interactive parking map and the lack of an effective and modern parking policy in the city and region, modernize the menu of municipal services, improve time management of road traffic participants and increase the tourist and investment attractiveness of the city and region.

"Our app will definitely come in handy for drivers, who will quickly appreciate the convenience and comfort of its use in travel and business trips. If you are in a hurry for a meeting or live on a tight schedule, travel and do not know where to park in a new place – do not waste your time and take advantage of ‘B-parking’," – commented the author of the project Oleksandr Zyma.

As the authors of the project noted, the convenience of the presented development lies in the creation of parking spaces equipped with special sensors. Several parking lots near popular locations of the city, equipped with special sensors, will be displayed with active geolocation, in real time with the status "Free", "Occupied", "Booked" and the indicated time when they will be available. The online car parking system proposed by the scientists will notify customers via e-mail and SMS, as well as administrators, as soon as a new order has been received, a payment has been made or an order has been canceled.

According to the forecast of economic efficiency indicators, the investment costs of the project pay off in less than 2 years.

It should be recalled that the Polytechnic signed a Memorandum on Partnership and Cooperation in the Field of Education and Science with the Executive Committee of the Poltava City Council and an agreement on the creation of an innovation cluster in Poltava together with the SIKORSKY CHALLENGE holding, the StartUp School of Poltava Polytechnic opened a new enrollment for students, and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine launched a platform for communication and effective interaction "Science and business".
