Future professionals learn about ways to counteract money laundering by reviewing cases of a banking institution

Independent Director of the Supervisory Board of JSC “Poltava Bank” Volodymyr Shcherbakov gave a guest lecture to students of Poltava Polytechnic. The future professionals learnt about the ways to prevent money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction by considering the practical cases of the banking institution.

The Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” has made it a tradition for the students to meet with the leading experts of the financial sphere of the Poltava region as well as the stakeholders. During such scientific, educational and outreach events, scientists, students and practitioners actively discuss the most topical issues that arise in the process of studying professionally oriented disciplines.

On 3 May, 2024, within the framework of the existing agreements on fruitful cooperation with stakeholders, the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation of Poltava Polytechnic hosted a guest lecture by Independent Director of the Supervisory Board of JSC “Poltava Bank” Volodymyr Shcherbakov on the specific problems of the system of preventing and counteracting the legalisation (laundering) of the proceeds of crime, terrorist financing and financing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in Ukraine (on the example of banking institutions). Third-year students of speciality 072 Finance, Banking and Insurance, who are studying the course “Financial Monitoring”, and fourth-year students of speciality 081 Law of Poltava Polytechnic, who have deepened their knowledge of the national legislation in the field of banking, took part in the scientific and educational event.

During the lecture, the speaker focused on one of the most difficult issues of financial monitoring in financial institutions – conducting due diligence of clients. According to him, the effectiveness of the “Know Your Customer” programme in banks depends in many respects on the efficiency of the overall prevention and counteraction system.

The participants paid special attention to the introduction of a risk-based approach, review of the procedure for identifying national public figures, determining the ultimate beneficial owners of companies, and identifying persons subject to international sanctions. The stakeholder briefed the students of the multidisciplinary classical university on the databases and Internet resources used by banking professionals to obtain reliable information about their clients.

Overall, the guest lecture was problem-oriented, and the specific examples from banking practice provided by the lecturer successfully illustrated the relevant regulatory provisions.

The scientific and pedagogical staff as well as the students of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” express their sincere gratitude to a stakeholder of the educational programme of the speciality 072 “Finance, Banking, Insurance and Stock Exchange” of the second (master’s) level of higher education, Independent Director of the Supervisory Board of JSC “Poltava Bank” Volodymyr Shcherbakov for the extremely interesting and informative lecture as well as for the attention to the issues of professional training of future financiers.

It should be recalled that earlier, the academics and students discussed the development of the “green economy” and digitalisation for the post-war recovery of Ukraine.

Recently, teachers and finance students took part in events dedicated to Global Money Week, finance students mastered CRM skills at Apple’s “IT Finance” training centre, and learned about corporate governance and compliance risks in banking institutions from real-life cases of JSC “Poltava Bank”.
