Future Translators Hold Round Table Dedicated to Human Rights

According to the Head of the Club, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department Anna Pavelieva, the topic and the format of the scientific event was not chosen randomly, as everyone has to know and protect their rights.

Philology students presented their own visions of the global problems of humanity and analyzed the main legislative regulations adopted by the UN Member States.

“The object of our scientific interest as translation specialists wasthe Universal Declaration of Human Rightstranslated into many languages of the world, as well as various international covenants adopted in order to prevent illegal exploitation of human resources.

“Unfortunately, not everyone is familiar with the universal human rights, such as the right to life and the prohibition ofslavery, the cultural, public and political freedoms, the social, economic and cultural rights etc. The principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are formed in the international agreements - the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment etc.

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is widely cited by governments, lawyers and constitutional courts, as well as by the people who applied to it to protect their rights. Together with the students, we have tried to first of all analyze the language, to enrich our vocabulary of English legal terms,” the scientist explained.

Informative presentations were delivered by students of Faculty of Humanities Valieriia Vasko (University human rights), Iryna Lobko (Protection of human rights in the UN systems), Maryna Sliusarenko (Slavery, servitude and forced labor), Angelina Lazebnyk (Women’s rights), Oleksandra Dybok (The right to education) and Inna Bidna (The right to healthcare).

“I think the topics we discussed are incredibly important because the Universal Declaration of Human Rights accumulated in itself the experience of the humanity after the World War II, and presented the first global collection of inherent human rights. While studying the practical translation course we covered the human rights and freedoms issues, so we decided to discuss the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights additionally on this event,” fourth-year student of Faculty of Humanities Maryna Sliusarenko commented.

According to the UN General Assembly, the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is celebrated annually on December 2. In 1949,Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others was adopted. It was ratified in our country in 1955.

On previous meetings, participants of the student club discussed gender stereotypes imposed by advertisements and the mass media, and law studentsanalyzed the ways of counteracting illegal exploitation of human beings.
