Head of the Problem Debt Settlement Department of JSB “UKRGASBANK” gives a lecture to students on the audit of the bank’s loan portfolio

On May 1, as part of the current agreements on fruitful scientific and educational cooperation with stakeholders, on the base of the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, an interesting scientific, educational and professionally oriented event took place – to share practical experience, her own professional achievements in the field of financial and banking activities, the Head of the Problem Debt Settlement Department of the Poltava regional directorate of JSB “UKRGASBANK” Liudmyla Hryhorieva paid a visit to the students of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law. With the initiative and comprehensive support of the academic staff of the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation of the Poltava Polytechnic, the speaker held a practical lecture in an offline format on the mechanisms of banks’ formation of loan reserves, work methods and conditions for bank write-offs of problem loans. Active participants of the scientific and educational event were the second (master’s) level higher education receivers of the educational programs “Finance, Banking and Insurance”, “Management of Financial and Economic Security” and “Accounting and Taxation” as well as bachelor’s students of specialty 072 “Finance, Banking and Insurance” of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law.

According to Doctor of Economics, Professor of the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation of the Poltava Polytechnic Svitlana Yehorycheva, such motivational, scientific-educational and professionally oriented events with the participation of potential employers, useful practical life hacks and effective cases from highly qualified experts in the financial sphere, and the practically oriented nature of science and educational events organized and held by the Poltava Polytechnic with the participation of experienced practitioners will best demonstrate to graduates of financial specialties their broad prospects and competitiveness in the modern labour market.

During the lecture, future professionals together with the speaker discussed the reasons for the emergence of problematic credit debt of an external and internal nature, the bank’s measures to prevent the occurrence of problematic debt, and considered the concept of auditing the bank’s credit portfolio as well as processing its results. The student youth learned about the directions of the organization of work in the bank for the settlement of problematic debts with the determination of the composition and functions of the involved departments, analysed the existing mechanism of banks’ formation of loan reserves. In addition, the speaker outlined the bank’s methods of working with problem loans and the conditions for writing off problem loans at the expense of the formed reserves, sharing the necessary practical tools with an active student audience.

Specialist Liudmyla Hryhorieva illustrated with specific hands-on examples the negative impact of non-performing (problem) loans on the financial condition of the bank, its solvency and reputation. According to the Head of the Problem Debt Settlement Department of the Poltava regional directorate of JSB “UKRGASBANK”, currently one of the most difficult issues in the functioning of the banking system of Ukraine is a significant share of problem loans in the credit portfolios of banking institutions, which currently amounts to about 40%, as well as the prospects for its further growth as a result of full-scale military invasion. This situation limits the banks’ ability to increase the solvent demand of the population and participate in supporting the functioning of the real sector of the economy and post-war recovery.

Students lively discussed ways to solve the issues in preventing the growth of problem debt in the difficult martial law conditions. The lecturers of the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” joined the active discussion, noting the wide range of comfortable conditions created by the university for fruitful professional communication, scientific, educational and personal growth of modern graduates. After all, during the teaching of educational disciplines according to educational programs, the teachers of the department always focus on students mastering the most relevant issues of the economic subjects functioning at all levels of the national economy.

At the end of the lecture, the participants had a question-and-answer session. In general, an informative meeting of financial specialties’ students with the Head of the Problem Debt Settlement Department of the Poltava regional directorate of JSB “UKRGASBANK” took place in a relaxed atmosphere of professional interest.

Earlier, a specialist in forex operations of a well-known exporting company gave an open lecture on financial management innovations, future professionals improved their accounting reporting skills at the Payer Service Centre of the State Tax Inspectorate in the city of Poltava, and a specialist from JSC “Poltava-bank”, a university graduate, gave a lecture to students a lecture on compliance risk management in the banking sector.
