The honoring of the birthday of Hero of Ukraine, Member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the IV convocation, major general in aviation, first-class test pilot, PhD Leonid Kadeniuk was included in the list of memorable dates and jubilees celebrated in 2021 by a Decree of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

“Together with famous inventor Yuri Kondratyuk’s name that our university proudly carries, we remember the name and honor the memory of the person whose dreams of space exploration also came into reality, the first astronaut of independent Ukraine Leonid Kadeniuk. During the tour around our museum, we always mention one of the brightest pages of university's history connected with the astronaut’s name, because his incredible international mission became the first stage of space exploration for the young Ukrainian state,” Head of the University Museum, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor of Ukrainian Studies, Culture and Documentation Department Liudmyla Cherednyk said.

The numerous exhibits of People’s Museum of University History named after Nadiia Kocherha include Leonid Kadeniuk’s book “Mission - Space” and the photo book “Ukraine, I am your son!” with autographs, as well as scientific and popular articles about the famous Ukrainian astronaut. The staff of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” are especially proud of the page in the wish book with the Ukrainian astronaut’s autographs dated by 1998, 2004 and 2010. Every time Leonid Kadeniuk came to Poltava, he visited our university with respect to the well-known higher education institution that was close to him with the specialization that the specialists were trained in, including engineering and ecology, and had a similar development dynamics.

Leonid Kadeniuk’s life was closely connected with the dreams about space, especially after Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin's flights to space in 1961. While studying at Chernihiv Air Force Academy, Leonid Kadeniuk did not abandon his romantic dreams. With every height he reached, his confidence in the future space explorations awaiting in the future became stronger. Studying at Moscow Aviation Institute and numerous professional courses gave him the opportunity to take part in the work of the orbital station “Mir” and the programs of space flights on “Soyuz” and “Buran” spacecraft.

The age of uncertainty and expectations started after the fall of the Soviet Union, as the space programs were closed due to reduced financing. However, fate gave another chance to the experienced test pilot, because the space studies of the world met a new powerful state with great ambitious plans for space exploration. Almost one third of the scientific, industrial and working potential of the former Soviet Union was located in Ukraine, and that gave young scientists the opportunity to continue working on the space problematics.

Leonid Kadeniuk was following the progress of the Ukrainian state in the space field, training his practical skills and hoping to be of use to his motherland.

In the process of the agreements on cooperation signed by presidents Leonid Kuchma and Bill Clinton, Leonid Kandeniuk was chosen one of the main candidates to participate in an international space mission, since he had the best results among 28 participants of the international competition. The Ukrainian astronaut was trained at the Institute of Botanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, at the space centers of Houston, Texas, and at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA.

During the STS-87 mission (November 19 - December 5, 1997) Leonid Kadeniuk performed 10 scientific experiments as a member of the international space team and as an engineer and a scientist-biologist, and held a “space lesson” for 40 thousands Ukrainian and American school students within their educational programs. Thanks to him, the Ukrainian Anthem was played in open space, and the astronaut himself was proud to unfold a blue-and-yellow flag in space.

Leonid Kadeniuk described all his memories about the space flight in 1997 as a member of the team of “Columbia” spacecraft in an emotional story in his book. The edition contains extremely interesting descriptions of the space flight stages, portraits of its participants, and the author’s thoughts about the Universe and the place of the Earth in it, as well as the human’s responsibility for its future. The idea of creating the Ecological Constitution of the Earth also belongs to him.

Upon returning to Ukraine, Leonid Kadeniuk worked as Assistant of the President of Ukraine for aviation and astronautics, at the Collegium of State Space Agency of Ukraine, as the Prime Minister’s Assistant, and as Head of the State Space Agency of Ukraine; he was also chosen to be a member of the parliament and the President of the Aerospace Association of Ukraine. The astronaut also joined the activities of the Ukrainian Youth Aerospace Association “Suziria” and became the President of the Civil Council of Ecological Safety.

Leonid Kadeniuk cared about financing of the state space programs, reassured the government of Ukraine to support the country’s status of a space country, took part in numerous international conferences, and trained to perform another flight in a spacecraft. But a sudden death stopped the famous Ukrainian citizen’s ambitious plans, taking away the possibility to fully enjoy his potential in the interest of science, state and the humanity. He passed away on January, 31, 2018. In December, 2020, the President of Ukraine opened a monument to the astronaut on Baikove Cemetery, the place at which he was buried.

The famous citizen of Ukraine left incredibly bright memories of himself as of a person of the future, full of space energy, open-minded and respectful, kind to people and full of love to our planet.
