Teaching Ukrainian as a “survival language” to foreigners is realized at university in two directions, communicative (the goal is to form communicative competence) and adaptive (the goal is to help adapt to the realia and the peculiarities of life in the foreign language environment). The communicative direction is the main one and is achieved by forming the necessary language skills in all the types of communicative activity - listening, reading, speaking and writing.

“The academic staff of the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culture and Documentation of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” are handling the challenges of today professionally, using the information technology. The open class is one of the control forms, the goal of which is to show the teacher’s level of professional skills and pedagogical experience for further improvements of the teaching activity. The control motivates the teacher to not stop at what she or he has already achieved and to continue self-developing, growing professionally. On the one hand, the class was intended to develop respect to the Ukrainian people and their achievements in the foreign students, and, on the other hand, to encourage the students to travel and go to excursions, to communicate actively with Ukrainians after the lockdown is over. The open classes held in Zoom are new realia of today,” Olha Mizina, Associate Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culture and Documentation of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” commented. She held the open practical class in Ukrainian as a foreign language called “Poltava as the Spiritual Capital of Ukraine” for the second-year students of ERIOG (group 202NH).

During the practical class the foreign students could watch an interesting video-presentation, comment on it and discuss it online, do a virtual tour around the city they are now living and studying in.

First of all, the students did the preparatory tasks to ease the lexical and grammatical difficulties. The foreigners read the glossary in turns in four languages, Ukrainian, Russian, English and Arabian. They could learn important names of places and districts of Poltava, which are very relevant and necessary in everyday life for orienting in the new area.

After working with the text and watching the presentation, the students were asked questions and would have to do tests.
