Lecturers and students of the Faculty of Humanities learn how to deal with stress and restore the psychological balance

The psychologist told the scientific and pedagogical staff as well as students of 1-6 academic years of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation of the Faculty of Humanities about the signals that indicate the development of mental health disorders, how to notice in advance that "your charge is falling", about the nine main signs of mental disorders (anxiety or worry, sleep problems, feelings of guilt and impairment, changes in behavior or feelings, sudden emotional outbursts, changes in weight and appetite, depression or unhappiness, calmness or isolation, abuse of toxic substances), how to deal with them, who you can turn to for help if you cannot cope with the problem yourself, how to restore and maintain your resource state.

"Despite the fact that this is not the first lockdown in which we found ourselves and everyone has already adapted to work during quarantine to some extent, it should be recognized that in conditions of limited live communication and forced remote work and studying, we all experience stress, decreased performance, mood swings, deterioration of mental health, etc. Mental health is a state of well-being in which a person is able to embody their potential, overcome daily stress, work effectively and fruitfully as well as contribute to the life of their community, and not just the absence of symptoms of mental illness. Therefore, it is extremely important to maintain one's mental health, fight stress, and if a person is still in a stressful situation, then try not to get stuck in acute stress and prevent it from becoming chronic, because it is necessary to realize that psychological problems are also part of life. So, to experience mental health problems is as normal as to experience physical health problems," – emphasized a practical psychologist of the psychological service of the university Victoriia Datsenko.

The specialist also shared tips on how to move from the so-called "fear zone" ("I buy food and medicine in excessive quantities; I spread emotions of fear and anxiety around me; I often complain; I get easily irritated", etc.) to the "learning zone" ("I try to let go of what I do not control; I recognize my emotions; I know what's going on and think about how to act; before disseminating information, I check it; I realize that we are all trying to do our best") and even "growth zone" (I think about others and how to help them; I make my abilities available to those in need; I live in the present moment and focus on the future; I treat myself and others with empathy; I am grateful and I appreciate others; I remain optimistic and hopeful; I look for a way to adapt to change; I practice creativity and keeping calm and patient). The psychologist also showed the students what exercises can be used to deal with stress. She discussed with the audience the psychological problems that concern students and lecturers and advised ways to restore the resource state.

This is not the first practical seminar that Victoriia Mykolaivna holds for our students, but with the beginning of the another quarantine, we decided to ask for another online lesson to restore psychological balance, - says the guarantor of the specialty "Philology", Candidate of Philology, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Anna Pavelieva. - We are extremely grateful to Victoriia Datsenko for topical, interesting and useful psychological training."
