Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" Anna Pavelieva went through a weekly training "Reclaim Your Media" under the Erasmus + program, which took place from August 30 to September 6 in Leipzig (Germany), and received a certificate of its successful completion. The topics of the training are devoted to the problems of media literacy education in modern youth, review of practical media tools, deliberation on the importance of critical and analytical perception of information in the era of global digitalization.
For five days, sixteen scientists and lecturers from Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Poland, France, Jordan, North Macedonia and Greece under the guidance of experienced trainers Vera Lucienne Pritzkau and Togi Con Leche had been working on tasks for formation of media literacy skills. The main purpose of the educational meetings was to deconstruct stereotypes and existing prejudices by learning according to the methodology of informal education.
During the training, representatives of higher education institutions and international educational organizations learned to develop strategies for detecting discrimination and hate speech, mastered the ways to promote inclusion, solidarity and human rights, raise cultural awareness, develop new tools and skills to work with young people in the light of European values. The classes were held in the form of presentations, discussions, work of focus groups, training participants explored the concept of media literacy in the modern world and its importance for critical and analytical perception of information in the era of global digitalization, considered what place of social media occupied in the lives of youth, studied strategies and ways of teaching young people media literacy, and shared national experiences.
The third day of the training was entirely devoted to creative writing, that is, the development of one’s own project to teach students the basics of media literacy, its public presentation and discussion with other participants.
A kind of training "highlight" was a photography master class, where participants learned Digital Story Telling – one of the most effective ways to influence young people, because creole texts are extremely popular among schoolchildren and students.
"Participating in the training gave me a unique opportunity to visit Germany, gain new practical experience and get acquainted with the culture of this hospitable people. Every evening we were sightseeing in the city, in particular we visited the museum of world-famous composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the Museum of Natural History. In addition, we went to the Schiller House Museum, where in 1685 the poet wrote "Ode to Joy", adopted as the anthem of Europe by both the European Union and the Council of Europe, "Auerbach's Keller" – one of Leipzig's oldest restaurants. It is described by Goethe in his drama "Faust", in which, according to the work, Faust met Mephistopheles.
The decoration of the excursions was also the Leipzig University, where from 1661 to 1666 the philosopher and mathematician Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz studied, the Church of St. Thomas, where J. S. Bach worked from 1723 to 1750, and the Monument to the Battle of the Nations is a monument dedicated to the greatest battle in the war against the army of Napoleon Bonaparte, which went down in history as the Battle of the Nations. I received great impressions and positive emotions, and learned a lot of new and useful things for myself. I definitely plan to share the practical experience with my colleagues and lecturers," – commented Anna Pavelieva, a scientist of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation of the Poltava Polytechnic.
Previously, the lecturer has repeatedly participated in a series of web-seminars from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, took language courses from the universities of California, Australia and Britain, and actively participated in the international online marathon for the Translation Day.
