Master’s student-translator studies at the NAWA Summer School of Polish Language and Culture

During August, Kateryna Svitlychna, a master’s student-translator of group 501-HF of the Faculty of Philology, Psychology and Pedagogy of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" took an active part in the Summer School of Polish Language and Culture on the basis of the university in Katowice. The student successfully passed the test for the level of proficiency in Polish and got into the B2 level group, having chosen the distance learning format. This format did not stand in the way of active discussions, lively intercultural exchange with the rest of the participants, and the full implementation of the program's tasks.

Project participants from different parts of the world attended lectures on Polish literature and the history of the country, leveling up the Polish language. The teachers of the school focused on the formation of conversational skills, the group consisted of only 9 people, so there was a lively discussion during the classes. In the course of the dialogue, in an easy relaxed manner, the students worked out the declension of surnames and names in the Polish language, the concept of conjugation, collective and ordinal numerals, the subjunctive mood, thoroughly discussed lexical topics. The central topics of the discussion clubs were medicine, art, in particular the film industry, modern technologies, etc., and the problems of the education system in Poland were also discussed: how to properly address teachers, write official letters to state institutions.

Lectures by the best teachers of the university were held every day for the students, the topics were quite diverse, the most interesting of which were: "Obrazy polskich miast we włoczeńnych kryminałach" (Images of Polish cities in modern crime films), "Ekspresowa historia polskiego kina" (A brief history of the Polish film industry), "Piłsudski i jego legenda" (Legend of Józef Piłsudski), "Reanimacje polskiej poezji" (Revival of Polish poetry), "Grzeczność oczami cudzoziemca" (Politeness through the eyes of a foreigner), "Tradycje i obyczaje w polskich domach" (Traditions and customs in Polish homes). Listeners were able to remotely visit Auschwitz Birkenau in Auschwitz, listen to an informative excursion about the concentration camp and take a virtual tour of the city of Cieszyn.

During the project, each participant had the opportunity not only to improve their knowledge of the Polish language, but also to learn a lot about the history of Poland, its literature, film industry and traditions. It was also interesting to see how native speakers build lessons for foreigners, which programs and materials they use, in which ways topics are explained. The theory is there, now it's a matter of practice, because "Praktyka czyni mistrza"!

"Such international programs are extremely necessary for our students, as they allow them to qualitatively raise their professional level and become a kind of "bridge" to obtaining a quality education and a favorite job that will bring not only moral, but also material satisfaction. Thanks to the dynamic scientific and educational partnership of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" and the leading Polish universities, the opportunities created to study the Polish language professionally, student translators are increasingly joining international youth exchanges and academic mobility programs, which, in turn, forms a powerful scientific and educational potential of our graduates", – commented Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation of the Poltava Polytechnic Tetiana Kushnirova.

Thanks to the rich curriculum, the student-translator deepened her own knowledge of the Polish language, communicated with representatives of other countries, shared her own experience with them, and expanded her cultural outlook.

"Thanks to the program, I gained additional practical knowledge and skills that will definitely be needed in the future profession of a translator. This is an invaluable experience that would not have been possible without the Poltava Polytechnic, excellent highly professional teachers, who motivate for new achievements by their own example. I express my sincere gratitude for comprehensive support and positive motivation to the teachers of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation, special thanks for the help in preparing for the project and thorough knowledge gained during my studies at the university to the Professional with a capital letter, the Candidate of Philological Sciences, the Head of the Department of General Linguistics and Foreign Languages Alla Petrivna Bolotnikova. I am happy to study at the university where I can learn new things, develop harmoniously and improve myself," – commented a student of the Faculty of Philology, Psychology and Pedagogy of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" Kateryna Svitlychna.

Recently, six Polytechnic students became participants in the Polish SPINAKER scholarship program from NAWA, a philology student took part in the project for Erasmus+ youth leaders in Greece, and a professor-philologist took part in an international project on modern methods of learning the German language.

It should be recalled that the rector of Poltava Polytechnic made a partner visit to Bialystok University of Technology and signed an agreement on a dual diploma program with AGH – Stanisław Staszic Academy of Mining and Metallurgy.
