The academicians and students of Faculty of Humanities of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” joined the German-Ukrainian project “Mit Deutsch auf Tour”, within which four language assistants held workshops and help Ukrainian students learn German with innovative approaches.
Students and teachers of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of Poltava Polytechnic and school students of Poltava visited four workshops in which they studied the lexical, cultural aspects, ecological issues, clothes styles, and the lives of the citizens of German-speaking countries. The events were coordinated by Doctor of Philology, Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department at National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Tetiana Kushnirova.
The first workshop titled “Fitness für das Homeoffice” was held with language assistants Konstanze and Daniela from Goethe Institut in Ukraine and was focused on the pressing issue of physical health during the lockdown. The participants studied new vocabulary, did physical exercise, learned some yoga elements.
Coordinator of the project, Doctor in Philology, Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of Poltava Polytechnic Tetiana Kushnirova said that such forms of languages learning are very productive, because the people who learn foreign languages collectively acquire knowledge with the help of innovative methods. It motivates the students and opens new opportunities for learning.
The second workshop “Nachhaltige Mode” for translation students and the students of Poltava Scientific Lyceum No. 3 was focused on the problems of fashion and the industries connected with it. The participants discussed ecologic problems caused by fashion industry, the types of clothe and the peculiarities of using them. They came to the conclusion that the excessive amount of clothes on the planet influences the ecosystems, and the dangerous situation becomes important globally.
The third workshop “Auf Reisen durch die DACH-Länder” for translation students and the students of Poltava School No. 38 was held by language assistants from Goether Institut in Ukraine Konstanze and Fabiola. The participants learned about the culture of German-speaking countries with online games, vaious presentations, and improved their language skills.
“Our students loved this way of learning the German language. This kind of communication is not boring for them and they learned so much with its help,” teacher of foreign languages at Poltava School No. 38 Nataliia Bilyk commented.
The final workshop “Spätzle Digital 2.0 – Linsen und Spätzle” was held by language assistant from Goethe Institut in Ukraine Philip Reiber and focused on the cultural studies of German-speaking countries. During a two-hour online meeting, the participants learned about a popular Swabian dish spaetzle.
“Spaetzle is the only kind of pasta that is cooked during production and served as a side dish to the main course with different additions and spices. It is interesting to know that this product is awarded a certificate of the European Union and protected as a historically important dish in Europe,” PhD in Philology, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department Olena Dmytrenko added. The participants of the workshop, Teachers of Germanic Philology and Translation Department Olena Dmytenko and Anna Pavelieva, students of group 401HF and members of the Wiedergeburt Poltava German Community cooked the dish together during the Zoom session. And after tasting it, everyone played Kahoot to check their new knowledge.
“It was fascinating to learn the language in such an interesting way, and the listeners learned a lot about the German cuisine and even tried to master this art. It was delicious and fun,” Teacher of the German Language at Wiedergeburt Poltava German Community Tamila Riabets said.
The workshops with the language assistants from Goethe Institut in Ukraine were interesting, informative, made for the improvement of philology students’ language skills and their motivation to learn the cultural and linguistic aspects of German-speaking countries.
At the end of April, during the I Conference of School Students “Philology in School Students’ View”, the school students of Poltava region presented their scientific articles about different linguistic issues.
