Members of the scientific club discuss financial mechanisms and consequences of monetary reform in Ukraine

On September 15, an extended meeting of the students’ scientific club dedicated to the 25th anniversary of monetary reform in Ukraine was held on the basis of the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation of Poltava Polytechnic. Students and lecturers discussed the financial mechanisms and consequences of the introduction of the Ukrainian national currency – the hryvnia.

Scientific and pedagogical staff of the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” held a meeting of the students’ scientific club “World of Finance”, during which first- and second-year students of “Finance, Banking and Insurance” and “Accounting and audit” specialties discussed the financial mechanisms and the main consequences of monetary reform in Ukraine, ways to introduce the Ukrainian national currency – the hryvnia.

Participants of the scientific club under the leadership of Doctor of Economics, Professor of the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation Svitlana Yehorycheva prepared interesting scientific reports and discussed ways and consequences of monetary reform in Ukraine. Second-year students shared with the audience their vision of the financial situation in Ukraine:

  • Ivanna Marchuk, a student of the 201-EF group of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law (“History of Ukrainian Money”). The speaker showed vivid examples of the evolution of banknotes used in Ukraine from ancient times to the first years of Ukraine’s independence, and the stages of a temporary currency introduction - the Ukrainian karbovanets.
  • Oleksandr Terpak, a student of the 201-BB group of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law (“Monetary Reforms and Their Types”). The young scientist identified the main characteristics of the Ukrainian monetary reform of 1996, told about the main types of monetary reforms, which are periodically carried out in all countries of the world to improve and strengthen their monetary systems.
  • Valeriia Tuz, a student of the 201-EF group of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law (“Modern Banknotes and Coins of Ukraine”) described four generations of Ukrainian hryvnia banknotes, named their distinctive elements, and explained the peculiarities of their security features.

During the meeting, Svitlana Yehorycheva, Head of the scientific club, Doctor of Economics, Professor of Finance, Banking and Taxation at National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, stressed the historical significance of the 1996 monetary reform, which laid the foundations for building a monetary system of independent Ukraine and contributed to the independent development of its economy.

“Working in the banking system, I had a unique opportunity to observe with my own eyes the selfless work of colleagues to ensure the proper conduct of monetary reform. It was a truly remarkable event in the life of the Ukrainian people!” – recalled the scientist.

Oksana Vovchenko, Candidate of Economic Sciences, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation of Poltava Polytechnic, prepared interactive tasks to consolidate the listened material. Students worked together to refute or confirm certain opinions about the history of money, solve puzzles, look for financial terms in the “finword”, and answer online test questions.

The meeting of the scientific club was held in a friendly, creative atmosphere. Students gained new knowledge needed in the study of such disciplines as “Household Finance”, “Money and Credit”, “History of Finance, Money and Credit”.

At previous scientific club meetings, students and lecturers deliberated on the use of innovative financial mechanisms during crises and learned how to effectively plan costs and save up.
