“Christmas is one of the most beloved holidays in Germany, which both adults and children look forward to. In anticipation of Christmas, strict and punctual Germans seem to change and become one big family. The bright holiday of Christmas is a holiday of joyful anticipation, and Germans start preparing for it in advance.

From the beginning of December, the whole of Germany changes completely, the atmosphere of the holiday is felt all around. Shop windows, facades of houses, arches, streets and trees are festively decorated: everything around glows and sparkles. On the main squares of all cities, large Christmas trees are installed, which is a symbol of Christmas in Germany. Since time immemorial, there has been a belief that the spirit of the forest lives in the green needles of a Christmas tree,” – said Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation Tetiana Kushnirova.

Alina Alieksieieva and Kseniia Fesenko, students of group 201-HF of the Faculty of Philology, Psychology and Pedagogy, joined in the greetings and presented our guests with delicious gifts.

The children of the society prepared a holiday concert, in which they retold the story of the holiday, sang Christmas carols in German and congratulated everyone present on the holiday. At the end of the event, all participants were treated to delicacies and delicious tea.

Christmas Eve (Heilige Abend) is the time when German families usually go to church and then sit down to dinner. The hostess usually prepares 7 or 9 dishes. On the Christmas table, there must be wheat porridge with milk, seasoned with butter and honey, stuffed goose with an appetizing golden crust as well as all kinds of snacks. Also, Germans cannot do without the Christmas cake “Stollen”, to which various dried fruits and spices are added. During the dinner, wishes for happiness, health and all sorts of good things are heard, and everyone gives each other gifts. And the child finds gifts under the Christmas tree the next morning. They believe that Santa Claus (Weihnachtsmann) brings them Christmas presents.

By the way, the custom of decorating the Christmas tree with garlands, stars, as well as various toys and sweets came to us precisely from Germany, and then spread to other countries.

Recently, on the occasion of St. Nicholas Day, a fabulous holiday was held at the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” for students of the Center for Education and Care of Preschool Children and Children of forced IDPs, and Poltava picked teams competed in a festive Christmas football tournament.

Earlier, the members of the students’ scientific club investigated the origin and superstitions of the most mystical holiday of the year.
