NAS of Ukraine leaves the International Association of Academies of Sciences

The Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine decided to withdraw the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine from the International Association of Academies of Sciences due to the Association’s disregard for Russian crimes against Ukraine.

NAS of Ukraine leaves the International Association of Academies of Sciences

On March 17, 2022, the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine considered and approved the appeal of the NAS of Ukraine to the administration of the International Association of Academies of Sciences to clearly state its position and condemn the unprovoked military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, as an organization that played a key role in the creation and development of the Association, called on the IAAS administration to clearly state its position on:

  • condemnation of the unprovoked military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine;
  • a call for an immediate end to the aggressor’s bloody violence against the civilian population of Ukraine, an end to the destruction of our country’s industrial and scientific potential, and the transition to peace talks;
  • suspension of IAAS membership of Russian organizations that either did not respond to military aggression on the instructions of their country’s political and military leadership, or expressed full support for this barbaric crime.

In its response, the IAAS effectively distanced itself from any condemnation of the actions of the Russian aggressor. The Association did not react to the bombing of peaceful cities and the destruction of civilian, including scientific, infrastructure, did not show any support to the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, our citizens and our state. This position of the IAAS is radically different from the position of a large number of international scientific organizations, associations, research centers, foreign academies of sciences, individual scientists and just people of good will who condemned Russia’s military aggression against a peaceful country and expressed support for the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and to all the Ukrainian people.

In view of this, the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine decided to withdraw the NAS of Ukraine from the International Association of Academies of Sciences.

It should be recalled that Ukraine has been granted the status of an associate member of EFNIL, and Elsevier provides Ukrainian scientists with free access to ScienceDirect articles.
