The holiday unites journalists, editors, publishers, operators, sound engineers and all those whose hard work supports one of the main human rights, the right to public information.
“In a context still marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the theme of World Radio Day 2021, "New World, New Radio", will highlight the services rendered by the radio medium throughout the crisis. The 10th edition of WRD will also be an opportunity to celebrate the resilience of radio, its evolution, and constant adaptation for over a century to our societies' changes,” UNESCO stated on their website..
The holiday was initiated by Spain, the government of which wanted to remind the world about the important role of radio, strengthen international cooperation and encourage large chains and local radio stations to develop the freedom of speech, the access to public information in their countries. The memorable event took place on November 3, 2011, during the 36th UNESCO General Conference.
The date of February, 13 was not chosen randomly; on this day in 1946, the radio program of the UN was aired for the first time in the UN headquarters. This moment started the era of radio, which was constantly fighting for its place under the sun and kept competing with information technologies.
Radio was never stayed the same - the first radio receiving set was patented in 1893 by Serbian scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla, and the first civil radio receiver in Ukraine was installed on December 30, 1902, on the line Kherson - Hola Prystan.
Radio has always been improved in attempts to adapt it to the life in the 21st century, offering various forms of communication and interaction, and, despite the dynamic development of informational systems and the Internet, it is still an important means of communication that does not require any payments, and one of the most popular media. With the help of radio, information can be received by the most remote communities and the elderly people, in cases when the Internet cannot be accessed.
Students of various education and research institutes and faculties at National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” broadcast on the student radio. During the lunch break, they play music and news about Poltava Polytechnic.
