“Night of Youth Science-2021”: scientists and students of the Polytechnic present their own research projects

On November 10, young scientists of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” for the third time joined a large-scale scientific event organized by the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine – “Night of Youth Science-2021”. More than 50 scientists from leading Ukrainian universities and specialists of state research institutions, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences, and civil society institutes considered the problems of development of academic and youth science in a global pandemic along with promoting the achievements of famous groups and individual scientists. Young scientists presented their researches and achievements, demonstrating the practical component of their scientific discoveries. Ukrainian and English became the working languages of the event.

The participants were greeted by Deputy Minister of Education and Science for European Integration Oleksii Shkuratov, who wished the representatives of the country’s youth scientific community the implementation of new creative ideas as well as scientific and educational initiatives.

Scientific cases of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” were presented by three scientists and a student:

Anna Pavelieva – Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation, Head of the Council of Young Scientists of the Faculty of Humanities of Poltava Polytechnic;

Kateryna Palii – Candidate of Philological Sciences, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation of the Faculty of Humanities;

Alina Chaikina – Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Management and Logistics of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law of Poltava Polytechnic, and

Yelyzaveta Kalashnyk – student of the “Management” specialty.

The topics of the reports presented by young scientists of Ukraine were very diverse – from automated control systems in greenhouse complexes, liability in private law, equipment and possible services of “SPM&RS-Center” or drugs to restore bone tissue “SYNTEKOST”, prospects for growth and development protection of plants and selection directions of rapeseed improvement to use of case studies at physics lessons and theatrical excursions in Kyiv.

Anna Pavelieva, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation, Guarantor of “Philology” specialty, Head of the Council of Young Scientists of the Faculty of Humanities of Poltava Polytechnic, presented a unique translation research and spoke about the peculiarities of the functioning and translation of 123 phraseological units with the lexeme “devil” (65 of them are part of the phraseological units with varying degrees of semantic fusion) in “Ukrainian” short stories by Mykola Hohol (translated by R. Piver and L. Volokhonska).

In her own report, the scientist considered ways to translate phraseological units, in the component structure of which there is a lexeme “devil”, as well as conducted structural-semantic and morphological analysis of phraseological units used by the author, narrators and characters of stories for expressive and evaluative characteristics of people, objects, and phenomena. Less often they were positive, and more often – negative (as insults and curses, offences, to express contempt, reproach, disagreement, denial, protest, surprise, call for evil spirits, denoting supernatural and unpleasant phenomena, sinners and connection with evil spirits, etc.).

“For the second time I am taking part in the popular science event “Night of Youth Science-2021”. In particular, in May I talked about the main problems of translating phraseological units in the first collections of Mykola Hohol’s short stories into English, so this time I decided to focus on the narrower aspect of this problem – ways to translate phraseology with the lexeme “devil”. In the seven stories of the writer selected for analysis, there are 141 phraseological units of demonological semantics, which is not surprising, since the demonic invasion of ordinary, everyday life of the heroes is the leitmotif of the collection “Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka”, as well as the romantic dual world (the relationship of real and unreal, human and demonic worlds) is the basis of Hohol’s chronotope in all “mystical” stories of both first collections of short stories. Hohol’s demonology is also embodied at the linguistic level – in a large number of phraseological units, which include curses, mention of Satan, devil, demon, the Evil One, unholy spirit, translation of which is a difficult task due to the large number of differences between not closely related languages and differences in mythologies,” – commented the author of scientific research.

Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Management and Logistics of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law, Head of the Student Scientific and Practical Club “Business Club”, and Business Trainer in Team-building, Time-management, Leadership, Selfmanagement Alina Chaikina and Yelyzaveta Kalashnyk, a student of “Management” specialty, made a joint report on the author's social and environmental project “Green Paw”, made within the researches of lecturers of the Department of Management and Logistics of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”. Among the priority tasks of the project: reducing the level of plastic pollution, increasing the number of aware and socially active population of Poltava, involving various stakeholders in the project, as well as helping zoo volunteers who care for homeless animals in the town.

The key goal is to unite all stakeholders of the project in order to implement their social responsibility through such activities as: establishing Yamomogabox, conducting trainings and seminars, raising public awareness about environmental initiatives and trends through Instagram.

“Successful implementation of our social and environmental project “Green Paw” will support the global fight against plastic, reduce pollution in Poltava, help homeless animals and zoo volunteers, create a high level of environmental behavior among the town population, draw the attention of local authorities to existing problems, increase the level of implementation of social responsibility by Poltava enterprises. The plan is to continue working on such social initiatives and promote the growth of social awareness and responsibility of the residents of our town,” – said Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Management and Logistics at Poltava Polytechnic Alina Chaikina.

Candidate of Philological Sciences, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation, Kateryna Palii presented V. Bryusov’s poetic translations on the basis of English poetry, analyzed the peculiarities of the artist's translation activity, spoke in detail about translation transformations to which V. Bryusov addressed. She spoke about historically synchronous translations (O. Wilde, O. Dobson) and diachronic ones (W. Shakespeare) as well as conducted their comparative analysis.

It is worth noting the high level of the event management, friendly and relaxed atmosphere, as well as positive mood during scientific discussions and exchange of views. According to the Head of the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Olesia Vashchuk, the popular science event “Night of Youth Science-2021”, which is being held for the third time, positively contributes to further popularization and development of youth science.

All participants of the “Night of Youth Science-2021” were awarded personal certificates of the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Previously, scientists and postgraduate students of Poltava Polytechnic shared their own scientific researches during a large-scale popular science event by the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, young scientists also presented successful cases at the first All-Ukrainian Forum of Young Scientists, and last year during the “Night of Youth Science” an IT-lecturer presented a unique scientific design.
