The German Unity Day is a National Day in Germany celebrated on October, 3, as a public holiday. On this day in 1990 the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) were unified into the Federal Republic of Germany. This is one of the nine state holidays in Germany celebrated in all the federal states (Bundesländer).
Last year, the Ukrainian-German Center of Polytechnic celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
On the eve of this year’s German Unity Day, the teachers of the Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Tetiana Kushnirova (Doctor of Philology, Professor) and Anna Pavelieva (PhD in Philology, Associate Professor) held an intellectual game “What? Where? When?”.
Philology students demonstrated their knowledge of German language and cultural studies, logical thinking skills, and answered even the hardest questions of the quiz. The topics of this year’s game included the traditions and customs of the German-speaking countries, interesting facts in history, culture and literature of German-speaking countries, and the events of the famous Germans’ lives.
“For the second year in a row, we celebrate the German Unity Day with the students by doing a quiz,” Doctor of Philology, Professor Tetiana Kushnirova commented. “Students are remembering the interesting facts from German history and art, learn to work in a team in a friendly atmosphere at our celebration. This year, due to the mixed form of education, we decided to bring together the first-year students who are studying offline and the fourth-year students (A. Lazebnyk, M. Sliusarenko, O. Kupriienko, O. Dybok) who are studying online. The older group participated in the event on Zoom and became the leaders of this competition, receiving 11 out of 15 points. We are thankful to our colleagues, who contributed greatly to the language level of our future graduates! Students and teachers of the Faculty of Humanities of national University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” really enjoyed the warm communication, new positive emotions and symbolic sweet prizes.”
Among the first-year students, the team “Brainstorm” (O. Kordunian, A. Alkhatib, T. Hetmanenko, A. Kuda) won the first place by demonstrating their deep knowledge and great behavior in the quiz.
The event was held with the support of the Civil Organization “Poltava Association of Germans”.
