Candidate of Science in Public Governance, Associate Professor Inna Kulchii and Candidate of Law, Associate Professor Olena Skrylnyk conducted a seminar-training on copyright protection in the context of academic integrity for lecturers and students of the Department of Germanic Philology and.

Candidate of Science in Public Governance, Associate Professor of the Department of Public Governance, Administration and Law Inna Kulchii explained what includes the concept of “copyright to a work”, which works can be the subject of copyright, whether it can be only part of the work or the work must have a material form, whether the protection of copyright extends to unpublished works, what law provides for the presumption of authorship, showed the participants what the sign of copyright protection looks like.

Partakers of the seminar figured out what is not the object of copyright to the work, how the protection of copyright to works posted on the Internet works, what are the rights of the subject of copyright and related rights in case of infringement of copyright by any person, committed using the Internet.

Listeners learned that copyright in a work includes personal non-property and property rights, which are the criteria for protection of works to defend rights in court, what is considered the use of the work under Article 441 of the Civil Code of Ukraine. In particular, the speaker explained that the exclusive right to allow or prohibit the use of the work by others gives one the right to allow or prohibit reproduction, public performance and notification of works, translation, rehash, adaptation, arrangement or other similar changes, import copies of works, any what is the re-publication of works, if it is carried out by an organization other than the one that made the first publication, etc. The issues of the right of access to the work and the right to follow, special cases of copyright (co-authored works, collected volumes, collective works, official works, characters, characters of real personalities, copyright of translators and authors of other derivative works) were also considered.

Inna Kulchii also acquainted participants with the legal sources of protection of copyright objects, in particular, with the articles of the Civil Code of Ukraine and the Laws of Ukraine “On protection of rights to inventions and utility models”, “On protection of industrial design rights”, “On protection trademark rights for goods and services”, “On Copyright and Related Rights”, “On Television and Radio Broadcasting” and others.

“The issue of academic integrity is now on the agenda of all scientific and educational institutions of Ukraine. Lecturers of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation, who act as supervisors of term papers and graduation theses, try to enhance students’ independence and individuality in conducting their own research and increase the responsibility of those receiving higher education for violating generally accepted citation rules. The issue of academic integrity is constantly considered during the meetings of the students’ scientific club “Philology”. However, this academic year we asked our colleagues from the Department of Public Governance, Administration and Law to tell us and our students about academic integrity and protection of copyright objects. The training also included a practical component – on the basis of these regulations on academic integrity in force at the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” students and lecturers of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation solved practical problems of academic integrity.
