National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” continues to actively expand its international cooperation, opening new horizons in partnership with the leading universities of Europe. One of the examples of such an effective interaction was the cooperation with a reliable partner of Polytechnic, the University of Greenland – Ilisimatusarfik, the only higher education institution in Greenland located in Nuuk, the capital of the island.
In June 2025, the Ilisimatusarfik website published information about a scientific article created as part of a joint research project with the participation of Associate Professor Javier Arnaut of the University of Greenland and scientists of Poltava Polytechnic Volodymyr Byba, Larysa Zhukova, and Nataliia Pinchuk. The article titled “Greenland & Ukraine: Two countries, one challenge” analyzes the importance of the extractive industry in both countries' economies and emphasizes the need to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.
Particular attention is paid to Ukraine’s experience in managing natural resources under martial law. The researchers emphasize that Ukraine’s example can be a source of valuable lessons for Greenland in developing effective management models, risk management strategies, and transition to more sustainable mining practices.
This article was a logical continuation of fruitful inter-university cooperation that started back in February, 2023, when Poltava Polytechnic signed the memorandum of cooperation and the bilateral agreement on Erasmus+ academic mobility with Ilisimatusarfik, the first university in Greenland that opened its doors to Ukrainian students and lecturers.
From April 4 to August 31, 2023, Volodymyr Byba, PhD in Technical Sciences and lecturer at Poltava Polytechnic, together with students Valeriia Shuliak and Valentyna Luhova, became the first representatives of the Ukrainian academic community to undergo training and internship at the University of Greenland within the Erasmus+ mobility program. Volodymyr Byba taught a course in Business Economics together with his colleague Javier Arnaut and conducted research. The students studied Economics, Arctic Economics, and Political Science as part of the Erasmus+ program.

After signing the cooperation agreement, the administration of Ilisimatusarfik publicly expressed solidarity with Ukraine and condemned the Russian invasion. As a sign of support for the Ukrainians, the Rector of the university, Gitte Adler Reimer, and the Head of the Internationalization Department, Per Arnfjord, organized a celebratory reception, a cultural program, and facilitated the adaptation of Ukrainian representatives as much as possible.
“For us, this is not only a partnership, but also a mission to support those whose lives have been affected by the war. We want to create a safe space for academic development and cultural exchange,” Per Arnfjord noted at the time.
Poltava Polytechnic expresses its sincere gratitude to the University of Greenland for its support, humanism, and sincere partnership in the most difficult time for Ukraine. We are convinced that our joint initiatives not only increase academic mobility, but also form a new culture of international solidarity and responsibility.
