In today’s difficult conditions, preserving life on Earth requires us to feel a sense of common responsibility – nation for nation, person for person, human for all other life forms.

Environmental students and teachers of the Department of Applied Ecology and Nature Management of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” annually take part in various environmental and ecological events, including the World Cleanup Day in Ukraine organised by the NGO “Let’s do it Ukraine”.

For two years in a row, environmentalists of Poltava Polytechnic have been taking care of the territory of Marusia Churai Spring, a well-known ecological object in the city. This year, 30 students majoring in 101 Ecology and 183 Environmental Protection Technologies, teachers of the Department of Applied Ecology and Nature Management – Head of the Department, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor Oksana Illiash, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Nataliia Smoliar, assistants Tetiana Serha and Svitlana Shara – took part in this event.

The tidying up and clearing of the spring from garbage and waste was preceded by an environmental tour, and Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Ecology and Nature Management Nataliia Smoliar gave an introduction to the biodiversity of the area as well as the history of the site.

The environmental students noted many interesting changes in the life of plants and animals in the autumn season, and also concluded that not all city residents know how to properly relax in natural conditions and in recreationally designated places. Therefore, after the tour, the future specialists joined a cleaning campaign aimed at drawing attention to the problems of a clean environment.

The active participation of students, members of the Student’s Scientific Club of the Department of Applied Ecology and Nature Management of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, in the international environmental awareness-raising event “World Cleanup Day” at the Marusia Churai Spring was a logical step in the development of the concept of sustainable development of this hydrological location in Poltava, in particular in the student research works.

During the campaign, the collected waste was delivered by students to the nearest collection point by the respective fractions. This recreation area collected the most glass, used packaging materials, and medicine blisters.

The students and teachers of the Department of Applied Ecology and Environmental Management of Poltava Polytechnic urge everyone to go beyond environmental campaigns, to be friendly to nature and to take care of the environment every day.

It should be recalled that earlier, the environmentalists of Poltava Polytechnic planted 3000 trees as part of the Presidential Initiative and organised an action to protect birds from plastic pollution.

Recently, Polytechnic scientist Nataliia Smoliar was awarded for her significant contribution to the development of nature conservation in the Poltava region.
