The presentation of the handbook " Centuries-old and Memorial Trees of Poltava Region" was held on the air of Ukrainian Radio "Ltava". The publication describes more than a hundred oaks, lindens, ashes, pines and chestnuts from all over the region in order to systematize information about the old trees of Poltava region for their research, as well as for their preservation and protection. The handbook was published within the framework of the project of the NGO "VeloPoltava", with the support of the Department of Information Activities and Public Communications of Poltava Regional State Administration. The compiler and initiator of the handbook was Yurii Repalo, the head of the NGO "VeloPoltava". He submitted an idea to the regional competition, won it and received funding for 2,000 copies – almost UAH 30,000 from the regional budget.

Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Ecology and Nature Management of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" Nataliia Smoliar spoke about the features of centuries-old trees and their ecological significance. Together with the compiler, the scientist discussed the situation of such trees in the Poltava region, their value as natural monuments and ways to preserve them.

"In America, there are services of arborists – when moving, one can take a centuries-old tree with them. Unfortunately, we have to preserve these trees in private estates only by bequeathing, granting the status of a botanical monument. In Europe, this status may not be revoked even if the tree has died (dried up). This guidebook is made with such respect and love: everything is clearly signed, there are a lot of illustrative material, photos. I think it will inspire many people and professionals to get imbued with this idea. Thank you, Yurii, for bringing such an issue up. I feel that we are not paying enough attention to these trees. You really focused on the issue that needs to be resolved," – commented Nataliia Smoliar. Last year, the scientist published her book on the preservation of rare spring flowers of Poltava region, and also co-authored a publication on the botanical reserve "Drabynivka".
