This year, the absolute record was set for nine years of the competition on the number of registered teams – 135. Participants represent 14 higher education institutions. The semifinalists were 74 teams, and only 20 reached the final. Two teams of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" became finalists – B-430 and C-955.
In the first part of the Steel Freedom Architecture Festival, the finalist teams of STEEL FREEDOM 2021 presented their competition projects in two categories:
1. Creating the project of the business center in Kyiv (Customer of the project is the development company UDP and KAN Development)
2. Creating the project of the cultural center in Kyiv (Customers of the project are Perfect Group and Riverside Development)
"STEEL FREEDOM is a community of active young specialists who will decide the fate of cities and create iconic objects in Ukraine and around the world in a few years. We set students complex tasks: communication with a real customer, teamwork, technical tasks, a site, restrictions and clear deadlines for each stage of the competition. Our mission is to show the talent and great potential of architecture and design students, to assert themselves, to open up opportunities for professional growth, and, of course, to create incredible projects for top construction customers using metal structures. This year's STEEL FREEDOM record by the number of teams and participants is extremely pleasing and encouraging for our team of organizers, because even more students will have new professional opportunities. And even more delightful is the creativity, quality and level of projects, which is increasing every year. We believe in every contestant, new iconic steel objects in Ukraine as well as we are honored to discover such talents," – commented the contest coordinator Andrii Rymarenko.
Chief Architect of the architectural bureau ARCHIMATIKA, Architect Dmytro Vasyliev, together with his team (participants of Steel Freedom of previous years) told real stories of work in the bureau "Former students of teamwork and half a million"; Oleksandr Maksimov, chief architect of AVG Group projects, shared how the company transforms objects, Oleksii Obraztsov, director of the architectural workshop ArchObraz, read a lecture on "Evolution of ideas about the dream house"; Vitalii Kvych, project coordinator of the architectural and engineering company AVR Development, presented the topic of designing the multifunctional objects; Anton Zakharchenko – project coordinator, and Oleksii Makukhin, executive director of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Foundation dedicated their report – "Museum of Exposition Model. The Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center" to a historical memory; and Andrii Ryzhykov, CEO and managing partner of DC Evolution, shared his views on elastic architecture.
The winners of this year's student architectural competition and the most interesting projects according to the jury, partners and spectators were announced at the award ceremony.
The general partner of Steel Freedom, a leading rolled metal products manufacturer in Ukraine, the international vertically integrated group of steel and mining companies "Metinvest", noted the team that best used metal structures in the business center project and awarded the B-430 team an architectural trip to Expo 2020 in Dubai.
Students Valeriia Honcharenko, Alina Yanko, Kamila Vashchenko competed in the team. Their curator was Senior Lecturer of the Department of Urban Planning and Architecture, Member of NSAU Pavlo Vasyliev.
The team also received a prize from the partner of the competition – Standardpark Ukraine, for the reasoned use of the company's products in the project – a certificate for UAH 3,000.
Earlier, the winners of Steel Freedom visited an architectural tour in Lviv.
National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in support of the Steel Freedom competition, and special conditions apply to participating students.
The Ukrainian Steel Construction Center has released an updated catalog of projects of the winners of the National Architectural Student Competition Steel Freedom for 2020-2014. "Projects in metal that inspire." It includes seven projects of students of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic".
According to the project of students-winners of the Steel Freedom 2019 competition, a social office with a reception of the mayor is being built in Mariupol. At the Steel Freedom 2020 competition, Polytechnic student Yelyzaveta Khomych became a silver medalist – in the final she defended the project on her own and it took her only 5 minutes of timing to impress the jury.
