On March 23, Odesa National Food Technology Academy held the summarizing online conference for the 2nd stage of International Student Research Competition “Black Sea Science” that is annually supported by Black Sea Universities Network and ISEKI-Food Association.
The jury of the competition included 106 specialists and scientists from the USA, Germany, Switzerland, Angola, the Czech Republic, Italy, China, Turkey, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Poland, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Bulgaria, Moldova and Belarus. The intellectual contest was held in order to develop international relations, active the students’ scientific work as the most important factor of specialists’ education, involve students in scientific programs, project, construction and other forms of scientific activity and research.
The research of students of Education and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Vitalii Kidenko, Mustafa Omer Mussab Musaad and Pavlo Havrylenko titled “Investigation of the Influence of Thermal Modernizaton of Panel Residential Buildings in Poltava on the Humidity Condition of Panels in the Joint Zone” (scientific advisors were PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor of Construction and Civil Engineering Department of Poltava Polytechnic Oleh Yurin and PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor of Construction and Civil Engineering Department Nataliia Mahas) won the third-grade diploma in the section “Power Engineering and Energy Efficiency”. The teachers of Poltava Polytechnic were awarded certificates for the training of talented youth and the help in the project preparation.
Student research from Ukraine, Poland, China, Russia, Slovakia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Israel, Costa Rica and the USA were submitted to this section. Nine projects were chosen for the second round of the competition, and the presentation of the main results of the research was held in question and answer format in English.
According to the coauthors of the project, the humidity condition of the external constructions of buildings greatly influence their thermal characteristics. With the humidity rising, the thermal protection features of walls decrease, which leads to the growth of thermal dissipation through them, the decrease of the inside temperature, the appearance of condensate and mold. This then leads to worse living conditions in the apartments.
The joint zones of panels are their weak points from the point of view of thermal insulation. The insulation properties of joint zones are worse than those of other parts of the walls, so the problems caused by humidity are the most prominent in these areas. It is due to the fact that the joint zone are less heat resistant than other parts of the walls.
“Today, there are good programs on thermomodernization of residential buildings. The goal of the prograns is to decrease heat loss through the external parts of the walls. The first buildings that are to be modernized are the residential buildings constructed in the second half of the 20th century that have weak thermal insulation. The heat insulation of external panel walls leads to changes in temperature allocation in the walls, especially in the joint zones. It then influences the humidity condition, which is the most prominent in the joint zones. Besides, a heat insulation coat covers the drain cavities, which does not let humidity go our of the walls. That is why the investigation on the influence of the thermomodernization of panel residential buildings on the humidity condition of walls is a pressing problem,” the young scientists commented.
Students and teachers of Education and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” are thankful to the international partners and the organizers of the scientific event for the opportunity to join such a student research competition. The practical experience of working on a project in a team and collective participation in an international competition will definitely be useful for the future specialists of the construction field in their further professional development.
