Student of Poltava Polytechnic wins a silver medal at the Paralympic Games

Second-year student at the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports of Poltava Polytechnic Oleksii Virchenko won a silver medal in swimming at the Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

On August 25, Oleksii Virchenko finished with a time of 56.30 seconds in the men’s 100m butterfly, second only to Belarusian Ihar Boki. The opponent set a Paralympic record, swimming the distance in 53.80 seconds.

“I am extremely proud of our student, who worthily represents Ukraine! My sincere congratulations and great respect to the athlete! His name already occupies an honorable line in the great history of Ukrainian sports. Such personalities are a positive motivation for future generations and an example for each of us. I wish you even more ascents to the top of the pedestal and success!” – congratulated him the head of the separate subdivision of the NGO “Student Sports Union of Ukraine” in Poltava region, the rector of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko.

“We are proud of Oleksii Virchenko’s sports achievements, as well as of every student at the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports. His thirst for victory culminated in high achievement. The university has created comfortable conditions not only for learning, but also for sports improvement of students. The key to this is the student sports sections of 22 sports, one of which is the swimming section. We promote and encourage the development of students in high-achievement sports in every way possible”, – commented the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports, Professor Lina Rybalko.

Our student outswam Uzbekistanian Islam Aslanov at the finish line and won the fifth medal for Ukraine at the 2021 Paralympic Games.

“I share this boundless joy with Oleksii’s parents, his coaches from the Poltava regional center “Invasport” led by Oleksandr Vereshchaka. With such ambassadors of Poltava, the sports student fame of Ukraine is spreading around the world!” – added Larysa Onyshchuk, Acting head of the Department of Physical Culture and Sports, curator of the 201-FS group, in which the champion studies.

This year, during the General Assembly of the Student Sports Union of Ukraine, Rector of Poltava Polytechnic was awarded for the development of student sports in the Poltava region.
