As part of the European Mobility Week in Poltava, scientists and students of the Educational and Research Institute of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Land Management of the Poltava Polytechnic created a bicycle route between the central building of the university and the "U" building. During the presentation of the route, students and teachers-mentors talked about the peculiarities of its development and shared the practical developments of the project.
The main goal of the project is to popularize cycling and improve road safety. Students of the specialty "Architecture and Urban Planning" of group 201-A (Dmytro Panchenko, Yuliia Landar, Mariia Semedilko, Maryna Makukha), 301-A (Daryna Bielinska, Alisa Pasko, Vladyslava Patsiula, Diana Semenets, Tymofii Myroshenko) and 601-AD (Valeriia Honcharenko) worked on the development of the route. Also, scientists from the Educational and Research Institute of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Land Management of the Poltava Polytechnic – senior lecturer of the Department of Urban Planning and Architecture, member of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine Pavlo Vasyliev, and assistant professor of the Department of Highways, Geodesy, Land Management and Rural Buildings Lina Hasenko joined the creation of the project.
"In general, the idea of creating this route is not very new. Ideally, it is planned to create a bicycle network between all institutions of higher education in Poltava, with the aim of improving student communication, in particular between remote dormitories and buildings. This pilot project can be an attempt to find a compromise between the current situation with the bicycle infrastructure in the city and to meet the needs of cyclists so that this direction will continue to develop," – commented Pavlo Vasyliev.
A student of the group 301-A of Poltava Polytechnic Diana Semenets told about the stages of route development.
"While attending summer classes, my students and I drew attention to the fact that there are traffic problems in our city, such as increased fuel prices and problems with public transport. Therefore, people began to switch to a more rational mode of transport, such as a bicycle. That is why we joined the development of this project.
At the first meeting, we were divided into two groups: cyclists and pedestrians. Thanks to this, we managed to look at the situation from both sides, both from the side of ordinary people and cyclists. The main criteria are safety and traffic quality. As a result of our workshop, options for a fast and safe route were selected. Having chosen the options that seemed to us more suitable for implementation, we conducted an analysis of the current situation of street profiles. Also, additional research was conducted to identify obstacles, such as poor-quality road surface and the absence of a ramp. After analyzing all the options, we chose the most successful one, in our opinion, which we could implement and which met all the criteria. The final stage was the solution to the organization of the bicycle structure precisely within the routes of our streets," – said Diana Semenets.
The presentation of the cycling route was attended by a representative of NGO "VeloPoltava" Valerii Nurumov, and a specialist in integrated urban development of the Poltava City Development Institute Oleksandr Pechenenko.
"It is very nice that young people have taken up such a business. The fact that you considered this issue in the realities that exist today is very good. The city is for everyone, not just motorists. The territory should be shared for both pedestrians and cyclists," – noted Valerii Nurumov.
"We hope that the developed concept of parking space organization and the further initiative to create an appropriate institution that will take care of parking will provide positive developments in this direction. All this will contribute to the formation of prerequisites for the development of cycling infrastructure and cycling routes. The Poltava City Development Institute will make every effort to facilitate the presentation of these developments, and then, with the support of the leaders of the Poltava City Council and the Poltava Polytechnic, we will implement this project as part of cooperation. This issue is relevant not only to students. I myself regularly use cycling routes. Implementation can be achieved through proper traffic management, clear markings and clear rules. Significant capital investments are not required," – emphasized Oleksandr Pechenenko.
Earlier, Rostyslav Fedotov's project "Design of the Poltava ride bicycle parking lot for the city of Poltava" won first place in the blitz competition from the MO "Institute of City Development", later bicycle parking lots were installed in Poltava according to the project of a graduate of the Educational and Research Institute of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Land Management, and the student architect proposed innovative spatial solutions for city riverside parks.
It should be recalled that at the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" the bicycle movement is supported, and the rector leads traditional bicycle races with students.
