Students personally form a unique set of courses

National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” has created unique opportunities for students to form their own set of competencies and develop professional advantages that distinguish them from graduates of other higher education institutions.

“Elective courses as an element of the Bologna Process have become an integral part of university programs in Europe. Poltava Polytechnic occupies a prominent place in the academic community of European universities and is actively updating its approaches to learning. Students have the opportunity to supplement their main specialty with an additional one or take separate courses to expand their worldview and erudition. They can choose disciplines from different faculties and departments. Interdisciplinarity and learning in mixed groups stimulate the exchange of informal experiences among students of different specialties. Lecturers work on personality-oriented learning of the most active and interested students. Thus, both sides of the educational process achieve a better effect. And most importantly, the competencies that a student can master, due to the flexibility of curricula and quality construction of individual educational path, make the graduate a very popular and highly professional player in the labor market,” – noted rector of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko.

In accordance with paragraph 15 of Art. 62 of the Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education”, students are entitled to choose courses within the extent provided by the relevant educational program and curriculum, in the amount of not less than 25% of the total ECTS credits ensured by this level of higher education. At the same time, applicants for a certain level of higher education have the right to choose courses offered for other levels of higher education, in agreement with the head of the relevant faculty or department.

The educational programs of Poltava Polytechnic present an opportunity for the formation of individual educational paths, in particular through the individual choice of higher education courses to the extent provided by law.

“We are talking about the implementation of the concept of truly free formation of one’s own educational path, as provided by best European practices in higher education. The principle of selectivity of academic courses gives students advantages in the formation of their professional competencies and the opportunity to choose from a wide catalog of elective courses. From now on, the student personally composes a unique set of academic courses. The professional component of preparing in each specialty is guaranteed by a set of compulsory educational components, developed taking into account the latest trends in the development of specialties (professional sphere) and many years of experience of Poltava Polytechnic in preparing specialists of the highest category”, – explained the director of the Educational process, and Licensing, Candidate of Economic Sciences Oleh Maksymenko. – “In the catalog, one can choose from a set of several interrelated courses (minors) and free minors – separate courses. Selected courses are required to study and are included in the diploma supplement.”

In the second semester of the academic year students must decide on the elective courses they wish to study in the following academic year. To make their choice conscious and high quality, they should read the list and syllabi of courses, if necessary, consult with the guarantor of the educational program, scientific supervisor or mentor.

The catalog of elective courses is posted on the official website of the university.
