The scientific practice is held at Poltava Scientific Lyceum No. 3 annually, and during it, students led by experienced teachers of foreign languages acquire new competences.

“Such an educational and scientific cooperation is very useful for students of the school and of our higher education institution, because they can exchange knowledge and contribute to forming new approaches in foreign language teaching,” Doctor of Philology, Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Tetiana Kushnirova commented. The scientist presented the advantages of working as a translator and difficulties that the professionals face in practical activity.

Teachers and students of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" held a number of workshops and presented the basics of translation studies to the school students. Lyceum and university students talked about translation studies online for a week. In particular, second-year student of Faculty of Humanities of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Kateryna Pochtakova presented interesting facts about translation in different fields and stories from translators’ lives.

“The profession of translator is incredibly fascinating, as it gives the opportunity to travel, learn about different cultures, meet famous and interesting people,” the student said.

Experienced translator, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Anna Pavelieva held several workshops on literary translation with examples from Dan Brown’s novels and Mykola Hohol’s short stories. The scientist provided interesting examples of unusual situations from her own translation work and from the life of famous people’s interpreters, which sparked the interest in all the listeners, because the translator’s work is never predictable.

“Translators have their specializations: some work with written texts, such as fiction, scientific, journalistic, technical texts, articles and documents, others work as interpreters (translating speech by consecutive or simultaneous interpretation). It is very important to know the peculiarities of the field that you translate in. That is why translators often choose one narrow specialization,” PhD, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Anna Pavelieva summarized.

The workshop was finished with a game titled “Music Competition” held by first-year student of Faculty of Humanities Oleksandra Nestoryk, during which all the participants tried to guess foreign songs translated into Ukrainian.

Anna Pavelieva's other workshop was dedicated to the peculiarities of modern film translation. The presentation was focused on the translators’ role in the release of foreign films in the Ukrainian language.

The event was continued with a game presented by first-year student of Faculty of Humanities of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Maryna Korniienko, in which listeners had to recognize famous films using spoilers in English.

And it is always an honor to share my own experience and knowledge,” Yuliia Hordiievska commented.
